  PCMDI > Projects > CMIP
CMIP, the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, is the analog of AMIP for global coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation models.
CMIP began in 1995 under the auspices of the Working Group on Coupled Modeling (WGCM) -- which is in turn under auspices of CLIVAR and the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Program.
CMIP has received model output from the pre-industrial climate simulations ("control runs") and 1% per year increasing-CO2 simulations of about 30 coupled GCMs.

 Common Management Information Protocol
CMIP was developed and funded by government and corporations to replace and makeup for the deficiencies in SNMP, thus improving the capabilities of network management systems.
CMIP does not specify the functionality of the network management application, it only defines the information exchange mechanism of the managed objects and not how the information is to be used or interpreted.
CMIP is a safer system as it has built in security that supports authorization, access control, and security logs.

CMIP now offers what it calls an “obvious” and “innocent” explanation: CMIP was financed “almost entirely” by Marcus but then later obtained other support: “at the time of the interview the information given was correct, but subsequently a supplementary source of financing was found.” The problem is that the explanation is neither obvious nor innocent.
CMIP is also misleading in its claim that all its other material is “superseded.”  In fact, the reports are still posted on its website and still lead those who read them to draw false conclusions—conclusions which CMIP eagerly takes credit for and makes no effort to correct.
CMIP has published other reports and material that make mention of the new Palestinian books; its 2000 report (the most recent when I wrote my paper last year) is still widely circulated.

And when 73% of youngsters aspire to fight for their country’s liberation (assuming CMIP’s claim is accurate), they are saying they would rather die fighting than die on their knees, subjected to daily humiliation of their family and friends, death and injury, destruction and home demolition, imprisonment and torture.
However, CMIP recommended a concrete expression of recognition by the Palestinians to indicate (on maps) both the State of Israel and the PA; no such mutual recognition was asked of the Israelis.
CMIP with all its available resources might be able to intimidate some government officials and media outlets in other countries, but will not intimidate Palestinians into giving up their legitimate national and individual rights.

CMIP has apparently misled journalists on the sources of its funding and for no apparent reason.
These issues are at best tangential; I have no explanation for the odd lengths the CMIP has gone in trying to minimize the role Itamar Marcus played in founding the organization, directing it, supplying its staff, speaking for it, and writing its reports.

S 2.144 Selection of a suitable network management protocol
In contrast to SNMP, CMIP is based on an implemented OSI protocol stack (OSI layers 1 to 3 are implemented as a protocol stack) and is thus also connection-oriented.
CMIP is a very complex protocol, whose diverse features are rarely required or capable of being used in its entirety.
If the CMIP protocol is used, a consideration is required as to which protocol stack it should be used on, i.e.

CMIP is a lot more flexible in this respect and it allows the user to define new data types.
In CMIP every protocol request travels over an association that has to be established first and then closed when the communication is over.
Also, in case of CMIP, the Proxy should be installed by the ones who install the stack and the OSI agent, if any, and Proxy users should not be responsible for configuration or maintenance tasks.

When the CMIP MPA receives this request, it sends MCS-RELT-Rs response to the request to the agent and at the same time the CMIP MPA needs to notify the user that the association is down between manager and agent.
Note – When the CMIP MPA is externally terminated, it does not delete its objects and terminate its connections as it usually does when it terminates in an orderly manner.
Every time a CMIP MPA is started, a unique CMIP MPA object is created in the Auxiliary Server Container (which is a subtree of the MIT) as illustrated in the figure.

CMIP/CMIS - Object Oriented Network Management
Where the SNMP MIB consists solely of a collection of attributes, CMIP based MIBs are a collection of managed objects that contain attributes, exhibit some behaviors, can be created and deleted, and may optionally provide application specific actions that a manager can request.
Allomorphism is a concept coined by the CMIP standards bodies to refer to the ability to interact with modules through a base set of interfaces, only to have the resulting behaviors coupled to the complete class definition.
One of the challenges in implementing CMIP based systems is in the naming, or identification of the objects within the system.

 SNMP, SNMP Enhancement and CMIP
In this article, the focus is to make the comparison between SNMP and CMIP in an attempt to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of both protocols and also to take a closer look at some of the new concepts which have been introduced into SNMP recently.
CMIP relies heavily on managed object classes, that define managed objects’ resources and additional operations that are specific to that objects, to do information exchange between managing system and managed system.
CMIP object name is typed name since it consists of a pair of attribute type and attribute value.

The Simpleweb - Articles - A Generic Management Model for CORBA, CMIP and SNMP
However, SNMP is beginning to reach its limits when more complex management tasks are to be performed, and CMIP -- owing to its complexity and slow standardization process -- has not yet gained the same acceptance as SNMP.
Its affiliation with C++, a widely used programming language, lends it to immediate use by a huge number of programmers and allows them to introduce distribution into their programs without a too drastic change of philosophy.
Although the elements of the proposed models are established and well known, their combination and their application to the domain of management is novel and makes for the issues of interest in this thesis.

As a result, a couple of suggestions have been made that the specification for CMIP over LPP be removed from RFC 1189, and the potential use of RFC 1006 be clarified in the current text.
Editorially, this is a minor change involving the removal of the one page which discusses how to layer CMIP over LPP and deletion of the phrase ``CMOT and'' from every instance of ``CMOT and CMIP''.
Thus, the suggestion to remove the specification of CMOT in favor of an RFC 1006-based CMIP is a relatively minor technical change to the existing RFC.
