Topic: CMYK color space

Gamut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In this context, digitizing a photograph, converting a digitized image to a different color space, or outputting it to a given medium using a certain output device generally alters its gamut, in the sense that some of the colors in the original are lost in the process.
Generally, the color gamut is specified in the hue-saturation plane, as many systems can produce colors with a wide range intensity within their color gamut; in addition, for subtractive color systems, such as printing, the range of intensity available in the system is for the most part meaningless outside the context of its illumination.
The gamut of the CMYK color space is, ideally, approximately the same as that for RGB, with slightly different apexes, depending on both the exact properties of the dyes and the light source.

Model color space CMY and CMYK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The components of color which have been emerged from such a difference are called CMY letters, because from the analysis in natural manner result basic colors and they are located on a axis of length of waves between basic colors from basic RGB model.
Cyan color is situated somewhere between blue and green, color Magenta (violet, crimson) has some red and blue and Yellow (yellow) is situated between green and red.
Such color can be fl more or less at the very most, because it is practically impossible to fabricate a mixture for fl color using three other colors from CMY set. This fact is often explained as a "dirtiness " of CMY components but it is not a truth in all respects.

Color Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
COLOR SPACE represents all the possible colors that can be produced by a particular output device, such as a monitor, color printer, photographic film or printing press.
Duotones are ideal for two-color print jobs with a spot color (such as a PANTONE ink) used for accent.
A color is said to be "out of gamut" when its position in one device's color space cannot be directly translated into another device's color space.

 Introduction to Color Spaces
Editing color spaces, on the other hand, such as Adobe RGB or sRGB, are device-independent.
A device color space is tied to the idiosyncrasies of the device it describes.
The space taken up by the balloon is the portion of the total number of visible colors that fall within the particular color space.

 Color Management: Color Space Conversion
Color space conversion is what happens when the color management module (CMM) translates color from one device's space to another.
This is not to say that converting from space A to B and then back to A again using perceptual will reproduce the original; this would require careful use of tone curves to reverse the color compression caused by the conversion.
This color shift results because the white point of the color space usually needs to align with that of the light source or paper tint used.

The chart to the left plots the visible color spectrum as the large "horse shoe" area, and within this is a plot of the CMYK colors, and the RGB colors.
Digital art that is comprised of spot colors (e.g., special colors: any colors that are not CMYK process colors), generally require conversion to the CMYK color space to enable file use.
Because color gamut's for spot color libraries, such as those associated with the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM, usually extend beyond the ranges of the CMYK color gamut, some spot colors may not be represented effectively using CMYK process inks.

In process printing on paper, a 50% screen of any color would be represented as a dot pattern which visually occupies 50% of the paper surface.
When screens of the four colors are combined in a proper pattern on paper, the human eye merges them into one color.

Color Schemer Forums - Problem with color models   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
It sounds like the problem you're experiencing with the printed colors looking different from your screen colors is because printers indentify colors using the CMYK color space.
My guess is that the colors you're trying to print don't have an exact match when your printer tries to convert them to the CMYK color space, so it just prints whatever it thinks is the closest match.
So instead of matching in the RGB color space and then printing, you might want to try to find some CMYK colors that are close to your original Trumatch colors, and then try to print those.

CMYK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
RGB are called primary colors because a color is produced by adding the three components, red, green, and blue.
CMY is called secondary colors because to describe a color in this color space, you consider the reflecting result.
The white color is reflected on the sheet so that the components of white (primary colors) are subtracted from the components of the 'painting' (secondary colors).

 Lawrence Chieng
Even though the color spaces for different devices are different, there are only two main representations: the RGB color space, which is used for monitors, and the CMYK color space, which is used for printers.
A good example of this problem would be a drawing where the background color is the red in the lower-right corner of the CIEXYZ color space from figure 9 and a line drawing on it is done in the color at the lower right corner of the CMYK space.
Instead, computers use numerous representations of colors: sometimes colors are expressed in terms of other colors that can be added together to form the colors being stored, as is the case when the colors are being sent to the monitor or the printer.

About file formats and color space
CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and fl) is considered a "four-channel" color space because it describes all color as the combination of some percentage of its four base colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and fl.
CMYK color is used in files that are created for printing to a four color (hence the four channels) printing system.
RGB (red, green, blue) is a three-channel color space because it describes all color as the combination of some percentage of its three base colors: red, green, and blue.

 Color Profiles
Although colors are normally specified in in terms of their Red, Green and Blue components this is not always the case.
So when you take a picture with a digital camera and print it on a color printer, the image is transformed from the color space described in the camera color profile to the color space described in the printer color profile.
Color profiles are held in a number of places.

 Device-Dependent Color Spaces
All color spaces have a white point, which is defined as the whitest white that can be produced in that color space.
Therefore, a color management system must be able to map the white point of one color space into another and preserve the relative locations of all colors.
It must also be able to map a color in one color space to its closest match in another color space regardless of the differences in the white points.

Author's original RGB color image is converted to the CMYK color space for printing on large-format printing press, potentially altering the image's color quality.
The CMYK version is then converted back to the RGB color space for electronic proofing and online publication, which may further alter the quality of the image.
Author's original RGB color image remains in the RGB color space through the electronic proofing and on-line publication processes, thus retaining the author's intentions and the image's integrity.

Research colors tend to be more primary versus colors in the real world which are more pastel and less concentrated.
If prints are evaluated under other lighting conditions, colors can shift to green (most fluorescent lighting), to red or yellow (under incandescent lighting), to blue (in shadows near window light), or a mixture of two or all three.
Because colors contain a range of hues from dark to light, and because only one particular ink color is chosen, color changes may have to take place in stages.

The CMYK color system describes a color based on the amounts of the base colors cyan, magenta, yellow, and fl.
The CMYK system is based on the CMY system, except that equal amounts of C, M, and Y are replaced by the single color K (fl).
Please note that the CMYK model is a subtractive model, thus fl is [0,0,0,1] and white is [1,1,1,0].
