Centre national de la recherche scientifique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) is the largest and most prominent public research organization in France.
It runs its laboratories either directly or in association with universities, other higher education institutions, or other research institutions.
Researchers directly employed by CNRS are classified in two civil servant corps, in order of seniority:

FRENCH RESEARCH:CNRS Researchers Take Up the Fight Against Allègre's Reforms -- Balter 282 (5397): 2162 -- ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Many scientists heatedly attacked Allègre's plan--which seeks to create closer ties between the CNRS, the universities, and industry--and the research ministry's representative at the meeting was nearly booed off the stage when he attempted to defend the reforms.
CNRS researchers began mobilizing last October, after physicist Edouard Brézin, president of the CNRS's executive board, unveiled proposed changes in the agency's statutes drafted in collaboration with Allègre and his staff.
Underlying the protest are years of smoldering dissatisfaction with the conditions for doing research in France, including stagnant research budgets which, in the face of ever rising research costs, have made it more and more difficult for scientists to keep their labs running.

Une politique de la science au CNRS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The historians of the CNRS also seem to accept the idea that a national science policy is a good thing, or perhaps they just assume that, given the institutional structure of France and the étatiste mentality of politicians and bureaucrats, no other route to a scientific paradise is possible.

The CNRS programs in the area of nanostructure science and technology are very extensive and range nationwide, from Lille to Marseille and from Rennes to Strasbourg, with the heaviest concentration being in the Paris area.
According to Dr. Bréchignac, who began with an overview of the CNRS activities, about 300 researchers in 40 physics laboratories and 200 researchers in 20 chemistry laboratories are involved in nanotechnology research with annual funding of about FFr.
Bréchignac and Colliex at the CNRS and Laboratoire Aimé Cotton, then described extensive and impressive work on the growth of nanostructured materials by means of direct cluster deposition from molecular beams, research done only by the CNRS in France at Orsay and Lyon.
