Codco's humour and theatrical style was related to the broad- based counter-culture movement of the 1960s and 70s.
Codco tapped into a need to satirize the absurdities and inanities of the human condition - and politics - that were also worked over and criticized by comedic entities such as Second City, the Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time Players, Saturday Night Live and Kids in the Hall.
Codco ended up changing not only the perception of Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders but it also changed the face of Canadian comedy and the performing arts to such an extent that it is impossible to imagine a world without the Budgells, Lucky Margarine, or the Friday-Night Girls.

The 46-year-old former CODCO member brings his one-man show, Still Alive, to the Factory Theatre for a month-long run that begins Saturday (Dec. 3).
It's an ironic statement, considering the fact that while he was in CODCO Jones seemed to be the one with the most to say.
Perhaps the most glaring example of this comic shrug was the CODCO sketch "Pleasant Irish Priests in Conversation." The skit, which featured Jones, along with Tommy Sexton and Greg Malone (as homosexual priests living as a couple), included references to vodka, masturbation, drunkenness and their relationship to the Catholic Church.

Placed back to back with The Kids in the Hall to comprise an hour of "adult" programming (after 9:00 P.M.), CODCO's satiric authority was enhanced by this yoking with the Kids' misbehavior and, in context, with the juxtaposition to the CBC's flagship national newscast, The National (later renamed Primetime News).

It was there that she met Cathy Jones, Dyan Olsen, Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton; together they would become the comedy troupe CODCO, named after the fish which has, until recently, supported the Newfoundland culture and economy for hundreds of years.
It was a time of "Newfie jokes," Canada's equivalent of the racist "Polack jokes." But CODCO turned the tables on Torontonians, forcing them to laugh at themselves.
After touring the play successfully throughout Newfoundland, CODCO stayed in their home province and continued to develop the wickedly satirical sketches and characters which they soon parlayed into the CBC television series CODCO.
