COLLADA version 1.4, released in January 2006, supports features such as character skinning and morph targets, rigid body dynamics and shader effects for multiple shading languages including the Cg programming language, GLSL and HLSL.
The COLLADA DOM is generated at compile-time from the COLLADA schema.

Text formats such as OBJ and LWS are linear and does not display the logical hierarchy of the 3D content, but Collada is almost like a merger of those two formats but with all their information hierarchically structured, as well as containing information such as weighting.
One thing about the Collada format though, is that it is focused on being used for interactive/realtime 3d.
Collada should be a standard part of the LW 9 import/export options.

COLLADA is a COLLAborative Design Activity lead by SCE US Randamp;D that involves designers, developers and interested parties from within Sony Computer Entertainment as well as other companies such as Alias Systems Corporation, Criterion Software, Autodesk Inc, and Avid Technology.
Collada specs are far from being complete..dunno why they called it 1.0 specs sheet..
What collada potentially provides, is exporters that are maintained by the tool vendors instead of by developers.

Por ejemplo supongamos que Collada truinfa y es un sistema mucho mejor que XNA para desarrollar para consolas y PC (en teoria lo es, OpenGL es un tanto mejor que DirectX, lo mismo que Renderware es mejor que Middleware).
pero el problema de Collada es que esta metida EA y esos si logran un estandar a su favor te meten mas 200 juegos de baja calidad (especialmente deportivos y medal of honors) bien publicitados que son exitos de ventas.
Los estandares de Collada son realmente buenos (OpenGL y Renderware se consideran un poco mejores que DirectX y Middleware en general) pero EA esta metida con Criterion que es la dueña del Renderware y lo usa para casi todos sus juegos.

I had looked at COLLADA about a year ago but there was no agreement on how the physics format should be handled and there was very little talk at the time about GPU shader support.
Since Collada is a resource format content creation, it may not translate well directly to the game's needs, and often these needs can't be twisted to fit.
At some point it seems that Collada should be left for content creation only, and when it's time to put it into the game it gets rolled up along with all the other info and game object needs into your own format.

Eso si en tiempo XNA ya lleva meses en manos de las desarrolladoras y Collada esta aun en desarrollo.
Collada para: PS3, y PC pero con menos funcionalidad que XNA.
Eso si, la carta sorpresa de Collada es EA que tien relacion con Criterion y usa Renderware para todos sus juegos.

COLLADA acceptance is definately increasing since the last time I looked at the forum.
COLLADA FX is a subset of COLLADA which supports interchange of complex, multi-pass shader effects and allows encoding shaders for multiple platforms in one format ie Cg, GLSL, HLSL.

Perhaps I am easily amused, but I was clicking on the old links that are on the side here, and I stumbled accross the address for Kbryna's old webpage that used to be titled 'A Lobby with Nine Hundred Windows'.
It's been a rough month or so, keeping up with the party circuit, attending holiday festivity's with the larger Collada family, reporting on the Nick and Jessica divorce, but I am happy to tell everyone that I am back and better than ever, not that it takes much.

You might want to wait on the animation stuff for at least a week or so on both import and export, since the API is being rewritten for the new armature code and will be mostly broken until the rewrite is done.
I have tested with some scenes from Maya, exported to collada documents and then imported into Blender and everything seems to work.

* Collada already has importer/exporter plugins for some of the major 3D applications, and they keep on developing it (not yet final version), U3D was already approved by Ecma and seems like they're working on it also...
During the Collada tech talk at SIGGRAPH, we mentionned that the FBX SDK will also allow developers to read/write Collada files.
Anyway that is great news that fbx will support collada, it looks like we really may be getting a true universal format.
