COMAL (COMmon Algoritmic Language) is a computer programming language developed in Denmark by Benedict Loefstedt and Borge Christensen in 1973.
COMAL was actually a mixture of the prevalent educational programming languages of the time, BASIC and Pascal, and was meant to introduce structured programming elements in an environment where BASIC would normally be used.
The "COMAL 80 PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE REPORT" contained the formal definition of the language.

COMAL is a computer language which was developed in Denmark as an offshoot of BASIC.
Until recently, the best COMAL arrangement was obtained by using a CBM 8096 computer; with the extra 64K memory, there was plenty of room for both the interpreter and the user's program.
COMAL 2.0 is a plug-in cartridge for the 64 which is expected to be available from Commodore in 1985 for less than $100.

OpenComal is a highly portable and free implementation of the Comal programming language written by moi.
Comal is a crossover between Basic and Pascal, with the best features of both and none of the drawbacks of either.
The principles of structured programming were available of course, but structured languages like PASCAL were not really available for small micro's due to limitations in the micro's resource capacity and the then available compiler technology.
