CP-140A Arcturus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CP-140A Arcturus is a variant of Canada's CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol aircraft.
Lacking the expensive, heavy and sensitive equipment of the CP-140 Aurora, the Arcturus was seen as an ideal platform for crew training duties (aka touch and goes), general maritime surface reconnaissance (detecting drug operations, smuggling of illegal immigrants, fisheries protection patrols, pollution monitoring, etc), search-and-rescue assistance, and Arctic sovereignty patrols.
All three aircraft are based at 14 Wing, one of which is currently being used for training with the school on base CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia.

How-ever, these aircraft are quickly becoming obsolete and are on the verge of becoming inef-fective as a result of the lack of political will to adequately fund essential defence pro-grams.
Canadians should understand the role our nation's maritime surveillance aircraft play in today's changing political and economic cli-mate and be aware that Auroras provide one of the most cost- effective means of achieving a variety of national objectives.
Under an extension of the Aurora modernization program, the Arcturus would receive many of the same improvements as the Aurora, except for the subsurface surveillance equip-ment.

Under the terms of the agreement, I.M.P. was responsible for completing the total interior (with the exception of the flight station) of three CP140A aircraft.
The Arcturus program was completed in April 1993.

Sometimes, as in the U.S. Military system, a change in variant brings a change in the common name as well, i.e., the CP-140 Aurora and the improved CP-140A Arcturus.
As in the U.S. Military system, variants are indicated by a letter immediately following the number, these corresponding to their U.S. counterparts, i.e., CC-130E, the fifth variant of the standard CC-130.

A suffix letter indicates either a major modification (eg: CH-124A) or model change (eg: CH-113A — the suffixed CP-140A Arcturus is an anomoly which also received a new name).
There has been an attempt to bring suffixes in line with US practices (eg: single/ two-seat CF-18s were designated CF-188A/D not CF-188A/B).
