Barcode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barcodes are widely used to implement Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC) systems that improve the speed and accuracy of computer data entry.
The first barcode reader was built by Woodland (who was an IBM employee at the time) and Silver in 1952 and included a 500 watt light bulb and a photomultiplier vacuum tube made by RCA for movie sound tracks (which were printed optically on film).
Stacked barcodes are a compromise between true 2D barcodes and linear codes, and are formed by taking a traditional linear symbology and placing it in an envelope that allows multiple rows.

CPC Binary Barcode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CPC Binary Barcode is Canada Post's proprietary symbology used in its automated mail sortation operations.
This barcode is used on regular-size pieces of mail, especially mail sent using Canada Post's Lettermail service.
This barcode is printed on the lower-right-hand corner of each faced envelope, using a unique ultraviolet-fluorescent ink.

Upon reaching the first major Canada Post sortation facility, the postal code on a piece of mail is changed into a barcode, which is printed usually on the lower-right corner of the faced envelope.
For regular-size pieces of mail, a UV-fluorescent barcode is applied, while for larger envelopes, a special four-state barcode known as PostBar is used, which encodes additional relevant information along with the destination postal code.
The complexity of the symbologies used do not make manual pre-printing of the barcodes practical, especially considering that the special ink used in the fluorescent barcode is not normally available to the public.

The binary level barcode is suitable for printing on rough-surfaced materials, such as corrugated boxes or cardboard.
As such, sometimes a zero digit must be added to the beginning of the barcode to make to total digits an even number.
The Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode may also be used as for German Post Identcode and Leitcode symbols.

Reading the patent text, it seems that the patent only applies in processes where the code itself is specifically created to contain a "file location pointer." So, it sounds like the use of already existing barcode standards that don't encode a "file location pointer," are specifically excluded from coverage by the patent.
