CP/M - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The combination of CP/M and S-100 bus computers patterned on the MITS Altair was an early "industry standard" for microcomputers, and was widely used through the late 1970s and into the mid-80s.
IBM never used CP/M in any of their computers, nor was there any other company with the domination of the market that IBM was to have in the early 1980s.
Programs written for CP/M were typically portable between different machines, usually only requiring specification of the escape sequence for control of the screen and printer.

The computer system as recited in claim 1 wherein said first processor is firmware driven and said second processor is software driven and wherein said second processor utilizes at least eighty percent of the available memory band-width.
The computer system as recited in claim 2 including a third processor coupled to said bus and operating under a third operating system, said third processor also operating substantially concurrently and independently of said first and second processor, said third processor dedicated for performing input/output (I/O) operations for the computer system.
It is imperative, therefore, if each of the processors 201, 202 and 203 are to operate independently and concurrently on their own operating systems and execute independent user programs that the relationship regarding the main memory band width requirements of each processor be maintained.

CP/M like MS-DOS is only an operating system acording to the loosest definition of such.
CP/M was originally written for use on machines built around the Intel 8080 microprocessor, but due to its great popularity four major incarnations came into being.
This meant that the constraints on the systems were the actual ones built into the specific hardware, rather than those of the original hardware i.e.

Stephen Petersen developed a prototype system, written in QuickBASIC and running on a KayPro microcomputer (with the “CPM” operating system) for calculating chronic exposures to pesticides in user-specified foods that would run quickly and could be used fairly easily by a non-programmer.
Technical Assessment Systems demonstrated the program to EPA, performed extensive QA (Quality Assurance), showed that its results were identical to the chronic calculations from the EPA DRES, and began using it as a business tool, licensing it to commercial end users.
This program was copyrighted by stephen Petersen in 1988 and licensed to Technical Assessment Systems for their use and for sublicensing to the same users who had previously licensed Exposure 1.
