CPU locking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CPU locking is the process of permanently setting a CPU's clock multiplier.
AMD CPUs are unlocked in early editions of a model and locked in later editions, but nearly all Intel CPUs are locked and recent models are very resistant to unlocking to prevent fraudulent CPU speed claims by resellers.
AMD CPUs are generally unlocked by connecting bridges (jumper-like points) on the top of the CPU with conductive paint or pencil lead.

cpu locking   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
AMD's CPU locking practices usually entail the release of unlocked CPUs for early sales of a new model, then the locking of all CPUs of that model thereafter.
While this has the benefit of preventing fraud in that a CPU can not be passed off as being a faster model than it actually is, it places limits on what speed a consumer chooses to run their CPU at.
Different CPU models require different procedures to be unlocked; usually the serial number marked on a unit belies what model it is and thus (with some research) what is required to perform the procedure.

CPUs generally are either sold unlocked, locked (but unlockable with some difficulity), or unlockable to the point where not a single individual has ever been known to unlock one before.
However, CPUs from Intel for example are released locked, and are completely unlockable.
This has the benefit of preventing fraud in that a CPU can not be passed off as being a faster model than it actually is, but it places limits on what speed a consumer chooses to run their CPU at.

Locking or unlocking a spin lock multiple times or not unlocking it at all (usually in code loops) would disable preemption well beyond the end of a critical section or enable it before the end.
Lock modes are implemented through a dynamic lock configuration scheme that essentially installs the appropriate set of lock primitives for the selected lock mode.
A lock class's position in the lockinfo table is also its position in the lock hierarchy; that is, locks must be taken in the order in which they appear in the table.

USENIX 2001 Annual Technical Conference Paper
With M-round magazines we would intuitively expect the CPU layer's miss rate to be at most 1/M, but in fact a tight loop of two allocations followed by two frees can cause thrashing, with half of all transactions accessing the globally-locked depot regardless of M, as shown in Figure 3.1a below.
The CPU can therefore satisfy at least M allocations and at least M frees entirely with CPU-local magazines before it must access the depot again, so the CPU layer's worst-case miss rate is bounded by 1/M regardless of workload.
First, balanced alloc/free pairs on the same CPU can almost all be satisfied by the loaded magazine; therefore we can expect the actual miss rate to be even lower than 1/M. Second, the LIFO nature of magazines implies that we tend to reuse the same objects over and over again.

Atomic kmaps were another source of non-preemptible sections: pte_map/pte_unmap both used nontrivial functions within and ran for a long time, creating a lock dependency and a latency problem as well.

When every part of a CPU is on a single physical integrated circuit, it is called a microprocessor.
The term CPU is often used vaguely to include other centrally important parts of a computer such as caches and input/output controllers, especially when those functions are on the same microprocessor chip as the CPU.
Rather, the CPU, as a functional unit, is that part of the computer which actually executes the instructions (add, subtract, shift, fetch, etc.).
