Computer role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CRPGs, in general, are derived from pen and paper-based role-playing games (RPGs) such as Dungeons and Dragons.
These CRPGs are often based directly on the rules and settings of pen and paper game systems (Dungeons and Dragons being the most common), sometimes even displaying die rolls and other game mechanics normally hidden from players' eyes.
CRPGs that feature complex, squad-based, and usually Turn-Based combat systems are known as Tactical RPGs, and may be abbreviated as "TRPGs".

 The CRPG Genre Part 1
Some CRPGs have attempted to create such a world in which the player can form his own adventures but this is a very tall order to do in a computer game compared to making a directed adventure with some RPG elements or a dungeon crawl for treasure and character level advancement.
The CRPG genre has seen a mixture of high tech-master pieces, design innovators, and a large number of long running series that are usually way behind the times in technology, which are sold to a loyal group of aficionados.
One of the better SSI CRPGs, Eye of the Beholder, was released in 1991, and although it had new features for an SSI game they had all been pioneered by other fantasy CRPGs such as Dungeon Master.

My own CRPG walkthroughs are written so as to let you know whether you've missed any cool quests or side plots or other things to do in any of the game areas without giving away what happens when you do them.
This is the closest a CRPG has ever come to matching my criteria: fantastic quests that encourage lateral thinking, a rich gaming environment, memorable NPCs, and strong character development, including deeply interactive subplots with NPCs who remember reactions you had to them five conversations ago.
This disappointing one-character CRPG boasts "hundreds" of quests--but accomplishes this by repeatedly generating random dungeons and placing random items somewhere inside them to be retrieved.

Let’s also accept that people play cRPGs for different reasons — be it a genuine desire to create and play a role, a power-gaming desire to maximise a character build, just experiencing the gameworld itself or even playing dress-up with cool equipment.
And while these genres all have their own fans, there is a group of players who enjoy the additional layers of depth and interactivity that a cRPG provides over other forms, as well as those for whom character progression itself is entertaining.
If the stats have little impact on the gameplay, the player is left with a series of useless, meaningless numbersÂ…conversely, a design that integrates the stats into the gameplay - where the stats have a visible impact — rewards the player for developing their character.

In many ways the gameplay and actual elements of the CRPG have stood still in time and really it's been more like the individual CRPG products have focused on the elements a bit differently, more on some and less on the others depending on what audience was being targeted.
Among all this, I continue to view Wizardry as a foundation where all the elements and gameplay of the CRPG genre are in focus.
All in all, the genre today is a lot bigger than it has been in the last five to seven years, and for that, we're all grateful.

Again, the CRPG player tends to like his battles a bit more slow-paced, tactiful and strategic than the likes of Diablo, which are more prone to the casual or younger player.
And a crpg HAS to have the single palyer party, because not everyone can or wants to multiplay, AND playing solo leads to a diablo game, with NO tactics, and NO challenge, again like diablo where you can easily kill 3000 enemies if you're powerful enough.

A well done CRPG practically lets the player tell the story, or at least lets the story unfold at the prompting of the player if nothing else.
I think a huge part of it is that CRPGs are still almost all DandD clones and are saddled with the whole "hp/ac/levels/classes" method of dealing with combat and character progression.
But there have been a lot of "loser" CRPGs that were not elves and magic, too, and I think the problem is that studios and maybe publishers feel that other genres are more risky.

In CRPG's, party based, with characters created by the player, can be a good option, probably the best, considering the alternatives for party control.
In conclusion, I think, out of the many ways of doing party based CRPG's, have a party of Player Characters seems to be the best, as it can provide more depth, and has some degree of logical justification (the player is the party itself).
