Topic: CSICOP

  CSICOP "Science Cops"
CSICOP's purpose is succinctly stated on Skeptical Inquirer's cover: "The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal encourages the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible, scientific point of view and disseminates factual information about the results of such inquiries to the scientific community, the media, and the public.
CSICOP editor Frazier is apparently so enthralled by his Nobel Laureate Fellows that he had no problem with this Seaborg statement— on its face a bald-faced admission of "rejecting claims on a priori grounds, antecedent to inquiry," contravening the supposed principles of CSICOP.
CSICOP members could not possibly be unaware that many scientists continue to perform cold fusion research, participate in international meetings, and even engage in commercial activities involving cold fusion energy and low-energy transmutation.

CSICOP is now the most well-recognized institution commenting on the paranormal; it claims to receive scores of inquiries daily.
CSICOP can be regarded as the first case of ongoing, organized de- bunking of the paranormal, (4) but there are some precursors.
Paul Kurtz, Chairman of CSICOP and a philosopher at the State Uni- versity of New York at Buffalo, (12) is active in promulgating atheism.

CSICOP was founded in the 1970s by Paul Kurtz, humanist philosopher and president of Prometheus Books, who remains CSICOP's chairman today.
CSICOP's primary objective is to serve as an independent evaluator of claims of paranormal phenomena.
CSICOP hopes its protests will become more effective once the group is an investor in the businesses of its foes.

Illegitimacy of CSICOP   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Thus, CSICOP by its very nature, is a Cult that attempts to prevent people from studying areas not approved by CSICOPs view of what constitutes a formal scientific group.
CSICOP, as a fanatical cult with a hidden agenda to prevent acquisition of new knowledge by investigation, is provable.
CSICOP consistently uses this approach to attempt to degrade or character assassinate anyone that disagrees with the cults position or engages in research defaulted upon by mainstream science.

CSICOP, of course, has a publication (which you can find at your local Barnes and Noble magazine rack) called Skeptical Inquirer, not to be confused with the other great journal of the Skeptic Society (a separate organization) called Skeptic, published and edited by Michael Shermer.
Agitprop is very correct when she accuses CSICOP of being biased and 'one-sided' in its attempts to pressure media to monitor its sloppy presentations of "facts" and "data" in shows and news stories that portray pseudoscience and the paranormal as reality or established fact.
The principles that CSICOP holds are worthy and meaningful and they serve the purpose of questioning the extraordinary claims of those that would attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting public.

CSICOP: The Paradigm Police - UFO Evidence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In reality, CSICOP is the home of the Paradigm Police, a kind of Pseudoscience-Central that deals in fundamentalist prejudice, opinion and bias, informed by a single, central hidden agenda -- to debunk at any cost any phenomenon, evidence or theory that touches on the list of taboo subjects that CSICOP has drawn up as forbidden.
Within a short time however, CSICOP officer Dennis Rawlins, who was acting as the study's statistician and was the only astronomer on CSICOP's council, announced he was quitting and accused CSICOP of blatantly fiddling the figures to prove Gauquelin wrong.
The reason is that CSICOP has not merely contented itself with engaging in debate against what it sees as crackpot science, its members have taken active steps designed to silence their opponents and deny them access to media outlets.

Skeptical Inquirer: CSICOP at twenty - Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal
Heading CSICOP as chairman these twenty years has been exhilarating for me. CSICOP has been embroiled in controversy from the start, attacked on all sides by the disciples of the paranormal - from parapsychologists and astrologers to UFOlogists and alternative health-care therapists.
Today, I am happy to report, CSICOP is alive and well and stronger than ever; and it is now a well-established part of the contemporary intellectual and scientific landscape.
CSICOP has helped to organize cognate committees in many parts of the world - the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Mexico, and Australia at first, and later, in an additional twenty or more countries.

The effect of CSICOP’s activities is to create a climate of hostility toward the investigation of paranormal claims; indeed, at one CSICOP conference, the announcement of the closing of several parapsychology laboratories was greeted with cheers.

I understand that on January 12th of this year, you wrote a letter to CSICOP asking for additional information about the UFO phenomenon and expressing the belief that you may be an alien, put here as part of a big government experiment to see if aliens can live like humans.
Something is still fishy here, in other words, which could conceivably have little or nothing to do with paranormal belief systems and/or propagandists of same, and perhaps everything to do with a dysfunctional family unit, to a teenager seeking attention, to a practical "in-family" joke gone awry, to a teasing older sister.
CSICOP has always had a sure grasp of what is appropriate and what is not.

Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP)
Amherst, NY (August 23, 2004)— In the September/October 2004 issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine, Paul Kurtz, chairman of the Center for Inquiry and professor emeritus of philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo, asks whether science itself can be a source of ethical standards.
Kurtz acknowledges the existence of "morally handicapped" and sociopathic individuals, but insists that it is time to recognize that there are evolved, genetic sources of morality, and that deciding ethical questions involves a rational, scientific search for the facts.
