  C.S.S. Palmetto State, Ironclad!
The Palmetto State was built as an ironclad ram, similar to the casemate ironclad CSS Richmond.
Leaving the Mercedita the Palmetto State now headed further out to sea chasing two other Federal steamers, who outdistanced her, finally she joined the Chicora who had crippled the USS Keystone State and was in a long range duel with the blockaders Quaker City, Ottowa, Undilla, Augusta, Stettin, Flag, and Memphis.
Along with the Chicora the Palmetto State declined an engagement with the USS Ironsides and 6 monitors on 17 August 1863.

Palmetto State also joined in the defense of Charleston during Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont's unsuccessful attack on the harbor forts, April 1-7, 1863.
Palmetto State was burned by the Confederates upon the evacuation of Charleston on February 18, 1865.

William Harwar Parker (October 8, 1826 - December 30, 1896) was an officer in the United States Navy and later in the Confederate States Navy.
Parker graduated in the United States Naval Academy class of 1847 and was assigned to the sloop of war USS Yorktown in African waters.
After several months' shore duty, First Lieutenant Parker was sent to Charleston, South Carolina where he was executive officer of the ironclad CSS Palmetto State and participated in her attack on Union blockaders in January 1863.

CSS Palmetto State, a Richmond class ironclad ram built at Charleston, South Carolina, was commissioned in September 1862.
Though the blockade was not broken, it was clearly endangered by the two Confederate ironclads, neither of which was much injured in the action.
CSS Palmetto State was destroyed on 18 February 1865, when the city was evacuated.

The Palmetto Battalion, the statewide Confederate reenactors association, donates the remaining balance raised at the Battle of Secessionville reenactment, about Eight Thousand Dollars, to the recovery and reinterment of the crew's remains.
