CSX has never returned to profit levels of the mid-1990s despite the fact that its asset base has increased to $20.8 billion, from $16.9 billion, since 1996.
Perhaps for that reason, CSX shares trade for 47% less than they did five years ago.
He notes that "CSX in terms of profits and stock performance has lagged its peer group." Recent efforts to restore profitability and fully integrate Conrail have been a "slow and frustrating process," he says.

CSX's verdict on its experience is a resounding one in favor of Java technology.
CSX assumed that, like its DOS-based predecessor, the application would generally be deployed on a single workstation for each customer firm.
Among the lessons CSX has learned, said Gibbs, is that there were many areas where they initially underestimated the power of the Java platform, only to find it was certainly up to the task.

CSX argues the city lacks the authority to impose such restrictions on interstate railroad shipments and claims the law could unreasonably burden the company's operations.
City council members are sticking to their convictions that the law is needed because the federal government has not sufficiently addressed the risk of terrorists exploiting hazardous material shipments, and they insist the railroad is exaggerating its claims of operational hardship.
While that is not the exact conversation observers on the CSX helicopter transmitted to CSX's disaster recovery team, it likely is close to reality for the spotters who spent a rare day watching the railroad slowly submerge.

According to Dan Tangherlini, director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), railroad giant CSX Corp. is at the root of the snafu.
According to Tangherlini, after the ceremony “the wheels came off the wagon.” Two days after the groundbreaking, CSX filed paperwork with federal authorities, confirming that it would discontinue train service on the right of way but hold on to the rights—which meant that though CSX wouldn’t be using the line, nobody else would, either.
CSX maintains it has always been open to discussing the transfer of the right of way, regardless of the District’s negotiating tactics.

So while I can't honestly say that the stock is a bargain by usual methods, I also won't deny that the company is doing better, the sector is hot, and investors still want to own these shares.
