CTI Records (Creed Taylor International or Creed Taylor Incorporated) was a jazz record label founded in 1967 by Creed Taylor.
CTI Records had some considerable success, and helped establish smooth jazz as a commercially viable musical genre.
Others rejected these arguments, noting that CTI Records often sold quite well, and, noted that despite frequent arrangements of popular hits, performances were often as artistically valid as any jazz, and furthermore, CTI Records helped keep many musicians employed and publicly visible in an era of generally declining interest in jazz.

Unfortunately, Taylor became interested in distributing his own recordings to retailers, a notoriously difficult and expensive business, and rather than increasing sales as he had hoped, the strain threatened to bankrupt the company even as it was enjoying its greatest success-Deodato had hit it big with his fusion version of "Thus Spake Zarathustra".
By 1978 CTI was forced into bankruptcy, though Taylor managed to strike a new distribution arrangement and signed the singer Patti Austin.
By 1979, though, Taylor was releasing reissues of the classic CTI records of earlier in the decade.

He then signed as a solo artist to the New York-based CTI Records and found success with his first release, an adaptation of Richard Strauss's 'Also Sprach Zarathustra', which had recently been used as the title music to Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Deodato's jazz version (originally intended for labelmate Bob James as his CTI debut) was an international smash, hitting number 2 on the US Top 100 and number 7 in the UK, and also collecting the 1973 Grammy award for 'Best Pop Instrumental Performance'.
After two albums for CTI ('Prelude' and 'Deodato 2') and with the label in difficulties (ironically caused by the success of 'Also Sprach Zarathustra'), Deodato moved to MCA, recording 'First Cuckoo', 'Whirlwinds' and 'Very Together', the latter causing dancefloor activity thanks to 'Peter Gunn'.

But at Creed Taylor 's CTI Records, the electric jazz of Freddie Hubbard, Joe Farrell, and others wasn't really fusion -- CTI had more of a "post-bop meets funk and pop" outlook.
And similarly, Gerard Presencer 's 1997 recording Platypus combines jazz and funk without being outright fusion; on this melodic CD, the flugelhornist sounds like a post-bopper who has started incorporating funk rhythms and using electric instruments.
Presencer's appealing tone is greatly influenced by Hubbard (with hints of Miles Davis), and original pieces like "In the Air" and "Still Moanin'" wouldn't have been out of place on a CTI recording that Taylor produced in the early 1970s.

At the time, many jazz critics dismissed these records as commercial pandering, but in recent years, they have brought the works of Walter Wanderley, Cal Tjader, Willie Bobo, Gary McFarland, and others a new generation of fans who appreciate the fusion of jazz, pop, and Latin rhythms and styles.
He finally formed his own label, CTI, in 1970, and quickly turned it into the most financially successful jazz label of the 70s.

George Benson is well embarked on the third phase of his career, and "Absolute Benson", though unfortunately titled (it sounds like a compilation, but is actually an album of new recordings) is another in a series of consistently excellent CDs that characterize it.
Benson excited traditional jazz fans in the 1960s and early '70s with his albums of inventive guitar playing on Columbia, A&M, and CTI, records that made him seem the logical successor to Wes Montgomery.
Then, in 1976, he moved to Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Breezin'", featuring the single "This Masquerade," on which he sang, and suddenly he became a million-selling pop vocalist who happened to play guitar, seemingly the logical successor to Nat "King" Cole.
