Temporary repairs enabled the CVE to return to (A port in western California near the Golden Gate that is one of the major industrial and transportation centers; it has one of the world's finest harbors; site of the Golden Gate Bridge) San Francisco.
The convoy arrived on 2 September, and the CVE's planes photographed the landing of the occupation troops at (Port city on southeastern Honshu in central Japan) Yokohama the same day.
She was decommissioned on 9 May 1946; struck from the Navy list on the 21st; and subsequently sold to the Zidell Ship Dismantling Co., Portland, Oreg., for scrapping on 18 November 1946.

 Historical Narrative of USS Salamaua (CVE-96)
Salamaua gunfire accounted for two planes during the late afternoon, but her hits failed to stop a third, which struck the Louisville 1500 yards off Salamaua's port beam.
Almost immediately upon being struck by the suicide plane, Salamaua went to General Quarters and shot down two additional suicide divers, one of which scrashed into the sea close aboard her port quarter and the second of which was disintegrated by gnfire as it approached astern.
Salamaua remained with the group until 3 June, steaming off Okinawa and furnishing direct air support to troops engaged in seizure and occupation of that island.

I have seen nearly all the combat CVEs' work and I must say the Wake tops them all for efficiency, smoothness and good judgement.
After 24 consecutive days of operations, Wake Island retired on 8 March from her station off Iwo Jima and rendezvoused with Saginaw Bay (CVE-82) west of the island.

 USS Salamaua (CVE-96)
Following shakedown off the west coast, Salamaua transported planes and cargo from San Diego to Pearl Harbor, then returned to California, whence she conducted a similar run to Finschhafen, New Guinea.
On 1 September, she returned to Alameda; underwent overhaul; conducted training exercises; and, on 16 October, again sailed west from San Diego.
Salamaua earned three battle stars during World War II.

NATOMA BAY (CVE 62) was hit by a suicide plane, and SARGENT BAY (CVE 83) was attacked by a second.

For the remainder of September and during the first week in October, those operations consisted of torpedo, surface gunnery, and shore bombardment exercises.
She returned to sea on 25 July and rendezvoused with Salamaua (CVE-96) on the 28th.
She conducted antisubmarine patrols with that escort carrier until 1 August at ~which time the task unit set a course for Leyte and temporary duty with the 7th Fleet.

 CVE-55 Casablanca class
This was considerably faster, and the class considerably more maneuverable, than the previous ships.
The new carriers received the standard CVE island, which was obviously more than satisfactory, and a large margin of fuel oil for refueling destroyers.

The fueling group, were the tankers, NESHO (AO 48), PATUXENT (AO 44) and MONGAHELA (AO 42), Escort carriers, NASSAU (CVE 16), SARGENT BAY (CVE 83), STEAMER BAY (CVE 87), DE's- HILBERT (DE 742), OSTERHAUS (DE 164), RIDDLE (DE 185).
While we refueled, the carriers got their replacement planes.
These pilots were going to fly the replacement planes to the large carriers.

My wife and I were delighted to read your account of life aboard CVE 75.
It was a great ship and I have always been very sorry that not one of the CVE's was ever saved as a memorial or tourist attraction.

This type ship was initially designated as Auxiliary Aircraft Escort vessels (AVG) on 31 March 1941.
The designation was changed to Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier (ACV) on 20 August 1942 and on 15 July 1943 all were re-designated Escort Aircraft Carriers (CVE).
References do not agree on UK lend lease by class or numbers.
