The FV430’s out-of-service date would be moved from 2014 to somewhere between 2020 and 2023, depending on the FRES fielding.
CVR(T) wil get upgrades for better survivability, Bowman digital communications and the replacement in 2008 of the ancient Swingfire anti-tank missile with the U.S.-developed Javelin weapon.
FV430, which could be in service with the British for nearly 60 years if it runs on to 2023, may have a series of modifications, mainly aimed at replacing obsolescent or aging parts.

As with the FV101 Scorpion, the Scimitar saw active service with the Blues and Royals in the Falklands War of 1982.
The FV104 Samaritan is the British Army armoured ambulance variant of the CVR(T) family.

In my opinion Fox was crap, CVR/T was not not much better, and Ferret, Saladin and Saracen were better than their replacements.
CVR/T was quite new when 1 RTR was equipped with it (Nov 1974 Tidworth) and we had just finished 18 months in Omagh on Ferret, Saladin and Saracen.
CVR(T) wins every time over CVR(W), spent many years on scorpion and scimitar and loved every minute of it.

Scorpion is fully amphibious, propelled in the water by it's tracks at a speed of 6.5km/h.Scimitar is an almost identical vehicle, but it mounts the RARDEN 30 mm cannon which meets the British requirement of defeating existing and future enemy reconnaissance vehicles and APC's.
The Army’s main Medium and Close Reconnaissance capability is provided by CVR(T) SCIMITAR and SABRE equipped with the Rarden 30mm cannon.
CVR(T) STRIKER, fitted with Swingfire anti-tank missile system, is found in Medium Reconnaissance Regiments.

As originally designed, Scorpion and Scimitar like all CVR(T) vehicles were amphibious and had a collapsible screen around the hull though this was not often used and later removed on British vehicles.
Scorpion and the CVR(T) Family by Bob Morrison (Concord 1044) also covers all the CVR(T) series with emphasis on in-service photos and useful close-ups, mostly fl and white but its colour section shows the main schemes.
Scorpion - The CVR(T) Range by Simon Dunstan (Tanks Illustrated 22 from Arms and Armour Press) was also good photo coverage of all the CVR vehicles and included the wheeled Fox.

However, industry sources believe that "there was not a level playing field" between the two bids as one is still essentially government-owned (ABRO) and the other is in the private sector (Alvis Vehicles), and their overhead costs and labour rates are different.
Alvis Vehicles was awarded a £32 million (US$48 million) contract in 1998 to convert an initial batch of 200 CVR(T)s under the LEP programme, as well as supplying kits for a total of 1,107 vehicles, regardless of who carried out the actual conversion work.
Although the CVR(T) family of vehicles is used by at least 21 countries worldwide, the only country known to have sent vehicles back to Alvis Vehicles for a complete base overhaul is Brunei (which has a fleet of just 19 vehicles in three versions).

Samson is the Armoured Recovery Vehicle member of the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) [CVR(T)] family of vehicles.
It has been in service since 1978 and is used by REME fitters attached to all units that use CVR(T) type vehicles such as Armoured Reconnaissance Regiments, Armoured Regiments (with Scimitars for close recce), and Mechanised Infantry (also with Scimitars or Sabres in close recce).
There is a large winch mounted behind the driver and Commander with the cable run out through the rear and pulleys on the hull roof for forward recovery.

With the withdrawal from service of FV101 CVR(T) Scorpion and also the Fox armoured car, Sabre was created by marrying modified Fox turrets with Scorpion hulls.
The resulting vehicle has the curve-sided turret of Fox with the same 30 mm Rarden Canon as Scimitar.
It can be distinguished from Scimitar by the turret shape and by the coaxial chain gun.

All variants of CVR(T) are currently being upgraded with the Bowman communications and information system and close reconnaissance CVR(T) Scimitar is also receiving the Battlegroup Thermal Imaging system.
Parts of the Scimitar fleet already have upgraded protection and there is a funded programme to upgrade the protection of more of the fleet.
Saxon is not a CVR(T) variant, but its currently planned OSD is also 2014, giving a total in service life of 30 years, although this OSD could also be reviewed.

 SABRE COMBAT VEHICLE RECONNAISANCE TRACKED (CVRT)
Created due to the British Ministry of Defence's CVR(T) rationalisation programme, the Sabre is a hybrid vehicle.
Created from the body of the Scorpion, and the turret of the Fox the Sabre is fitted with the standard 30mm Rarden Cannon found on similar British Army vehicles of the CVR(T) class.
Modifications were made to the manually operated turret of the Fox to include redesigned smoke grenade launchers and the 7.62mm MachineGun was replaced with a more powerful 7.62mm Chain Gun.

The last consignment of overhaul and 'dieselisation' kits for the Royal Army of Oman's Scorpion Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) (CVR(T)) family of light armoured vehicles has been shipped by Alvis Vehicles Ltd.
The upgrade, based on a similar project for the British Army fleet of CVR(T)s - see JDU Vol V No.18 p5 - was ordered for Oman's 60-vehicle fleet in Spring 2001.
The original Jaguar petrol engine is replaced by a Cummins BTA 5.9 diesel engine (see JDU Vol III No.11 pp7-8) and a number of other minor improvements are designed to extend the vehicle's life to 2015.
