  CVT
Nissans CVT uses variable cone shaped pulleys and a segmented steel belt as opposed to a hydrostatic or toroidal solution.
IE the margin on the CVT is 150NM?
Nissan is being careful not to over emphasize the CVT in their marketing of the Murano even though they have spent lots of money in the development of the technology over a couple decades, have used it for years in "foreign" markets, and some racing.

  InsightCentral.net - Encyclopedia - Honda Insight CVT
Note that while the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius both offer CVT transmissions that both provide stepless acceleration and a continuous range of motor speed to vehicle speed ratios, the Prius CVT (called 'ECVT' by Toyota) system is mechanically entirely different.
The CVT transmission used in the Insight is very similar to the CVT transmission that Honda has used in other vehicles, including the Civic HX in the United States, and the Honda Logo in Europe and Japan.
The CVT transmission consists of an oil-pressure variable input (aka "driving") and output (aka "driven") pulley, and a metal belt that connects the two.

 CVT Enters the Mainstream
CVT's promise, both as a boon to fuel economy and as a low-cost alternative to conventional transmissions, has prompted us to revisit the topic.
Since our article CVT For You and Me appeared, a number of automakers have brought new CVT-equipped vehicles to market, and more are on the way.
Essentially, a CVT transmission operates by varying the working diameters of the two main pulleys in the transmission.

NISSAN | Technologies for Improving Fuel Economy: Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Simply put, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a system that optimizes engine efficiency and performance for all driving conditions by two pulleys connected by a steel belt.
This belt-type CVT that continuously varies the transmission ratio through the use of a pulley and steel belt was installed for the first time in the March 1992.
This is the world's first CVT that was commercialized to provide drive power and ratio changes by combining disk and power rollers (double cavity type).

 Waiting for CVT's Trial Results [Fool.com] November 01, 2006
Aceon only brought in $1 million to CVT in the second quarter, and I'm sure these paltry revenues and costs associated with the marketing of it won't be missed if Ranexa is successful in the Merlin trial.
CVT currently has more than $350 million in cash and equivalents on its balance sheet after engaging in another dilutive financing to stem the $76 million in costs incurred during the quarter.
CVT is going to need to do another financing of some sort next year, but I doubt investors will mind at all, assuming the Merlin clinical trial results are favorable, so we'll have to wait and see.

 Honda Multimatic
What's so great about MMT is it being a CVT gearbox, is able to continously change the effective gear ratio to perfectly complement the drive of the car to the requirement of the driver's right foot.
But while conventional belt-driven CVT gearboxes are severely limited in their power handling capacity, Honda's MMT is additionally able to handle power as high as 130ps from the 3-stage VTEC D15B engine.
The CVT belt is prone to slipping when it is asked to transmit too much power between the two sets of conical pulleys.

The core of CVT consists of a driving belt running between two pulleys, one connect to the engine output and one to the drive shaft.
In the 80s, CVT failed to be popular because belts were not strong enough to handle the torque from larger engines.
Nissan, accompany with its partner Subaru, is widely regarded as the leader in CVT technology, especially after it launched M6 Hyper-CVT in the Japanese Primera.

Demonstrated performance exceeds current belt and traction CVTs and the technology provides additional functionality of hydraulic regeneration (energy recovery during braking and deceleration - ideal for city operation), high efficiency at all times (especially final ratio - ideal for highway operation) and exceptional low speed vehicle controllability (ideal for off-road operation).

 Howstuffworks "How CVTs Work"
But the continuously variable transmission (CVT), which Leonardo da Vinci conceptualized more than 500 years ago and is now replacing planetary automatic transmissions in some automobiles, is one old dog that has definitely learned a few new tricks.
Indeed, ever since the first toroidal CVT patent was filed in 1886, the technology has been refined and improved.
Today, several car manufacturers, including General Motors, Audi, Honda and Nissan, are designing their drivetrains around CVTs.

The CVT also has a Sports driving mode, engaged by moving the gear lever from position "D" leftwards to position "S".
These "gears" are created by the fact that the CVT transmission is limited electronically to six pre-determined ratios.
Accelerating from standstill is particularly smooth with CVT and Steptronic, since the electronically controlled coupling does not transmit the full power until an engine speed of 2,000 rpm is reached; instead, the power produced is restricted and transmitted evenly, resulting in rewardingly smooth acceleration.

Now he and his year-old company are out pedaling, in both senses of the word, their new CVT design, which they say is more efficient and less complicated that previous or current designs like those used in the ground-breaking Toyota Prius and Ford Escape gasoline-electric hybrids.
Actually, there would be little go be gained by adding a mechanical CVT to them since electric motors and generators can operate at very high effeciencies over a wide range of speeds and loads.
Any slight gain in efficiency of the motor and generator imparted by the CVT would most likely be more than lost by the losses in the CVT.

 Notes on Continuously Variable Transmissions
The most common type of CVT is the frictional type, in which two bodies are brought into contact at points of varying distance from their axes of rotation, and allowing friction to transfer motion from one body to the other.
The simplest CVT seems to be the "disk and wheel" design, in which a wheel rides upon the surface of a rotating disk; the wheel may be slid along it's splined axle to contact the disk at different distances from it's center.
A hydraulic CVT is a hydraulic pump driving a hydraulic motor, at least one of which has a variable displacement.

Brief drive: MINI Cooper CVT | Test Drives | Motoring | Telegraph
Everything apart from British traffic moves faster nowadays, so the CVT is with us only months after the manual, available on both One and Cooper for £980 (it can't handle the 163bhp of the Cooper S).
Perhaps this is a reflection that most CVTs will be sold in America, where clutch pedals have been obsolete for donkey's years.
Both performance and economy are inferior to the manual version, but the 0-62mph (100kph) figure of 10.4 seconds is misleadingly slow as acceleration from rest is affected by the CVT clutch's deliberate lag.

Green Car Congress: NexxtDrive DualDrive e-CVT Prototype Promises Fuel Savings, Hybrid Capability
In plain CVT mode, controlling the relative speed of the two electric motors gives full control of the gearbox ratio, allowing the vehicle’s engine to operate at its most efficient speed in all conditions, delivering potential fuel and CO emissions savings of up to 20% even in a non-hybrid application, according to the company.
Improvements on the CVT front come not from an external supplement to the drive torque, but just from the more efficient operation of the engine and transmission (e.g., precisely the right gear for the right speed, condition, etc.)
Or to look at it from another perspective, they designed a mild-hybrid transmission--but without the battery and energy storage systems, and hence the hybrid functionality--which serves to replace a conventional CVT and delivers what they claim will be a significant increase in efficiency relative to a conventional transmission.
