Cab unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cab unit and a carbody unit are body styles of locomotives in railroad terminology.
For this reason, cab units are mostly used in situations where rear visibility is not important, such as power for through freight and passenger trains.
Cab units are also more aerodynamic than hood units, and pulled many of the streamliner trains.

Units were found and purchased from many diverse locations, with applications ranging from a unit modified with a camera boom and wheeled outriggers for movie photo shoots to a 30-year-old unit with less than 2,000 operating hours previously owned by the Atomic Energy Commission.
Units were proposed to the county whereby the operator was required to drive in reverse from a pedestal mounted cab while promotional footage of the unit's operation showed the front end shaking dramatically on usage.
Buckets were demonstrated, and a unit was selected that seemed particularly appropriate for the trash mixture in Miami with an extended life of 300,000 cycles, hydraulic power rotation, and a closure force of 4,000 lb.

Pre-assembled wall unit for a vehicle cab - Patent 6578907
Cabs for industrial or agricultural vehicles, frequently include a rollover protection frame that is fastened to a rigid floor plate to whose rear side regions fenders are fastened.
Preferably, the cab enclosure is configured as a cover which projects to the side over the support structure for a cab configuration in which air filter housings are integrated into the cab wall and which are provided with ventilation ducts open to the interior of the cab.
This permits a simple assembly of the wall unit 24, that can be set upon the sliding rails with their skids and then slid forward into the tractor cab 10 until the opening in the rear of the cab is closed by the support structure 26.

A unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An A unit, in railroad terminology, is a locomotive (generally a diesel or electric locomotive) equipped with a driving cab, or crew compartment, and the control system to control other locomotives in a multiple unit, and therefore able to be the lead unit in a consist of several locomotives controlled from a single position.
B units always lack all of these features, except that some EMD F-units have an extra porthole-style side window(s) for a hostler (an employee permitted to move a locomotive in a yard only — not on the road).
Hood unit "road switcher" types were generally equipped with driving cabs and the term "A unit" was not generally applied to them, although the rare cabless road switchers were still called B units.

 Union Pacific EMD F Units
The Union Pacific Railroad was an early convert to the benefits of dieselization, and as such, was the owner of the largest fleet of EMD F3A cab units and F3B booster unit locomotives in the nation, with 89 cab units and 90 booster units.
The four cab units, six booster units, and two FP7s that came in 1952, along with the one F7A that came in 1953, were not ordered as such, but came either as special purchases or as replacements for other, wrecked locomotives.
The remaining three cab units, 904, 905, and 909, were rebuilt to F7As by EMD at La Grange in late 1954 and early 1955, becoming the 1455, 1456, and 1460.

One cab evaluated was a very old Davey M8B surface drill, in which it was not physically possible to seal the cab.1# This cab had large holes in the enclosure where control linkages entered the cab, as well as a loose-fitting bifold door that was on the drill table side of the drill.
A new air-conditioning/heater pressurization and filtration unit was installed on the roof of the cab, but because of the numerous gaps and holes in the cab enclosure, positive pressure was not achievable.
Their unit was comprised of three different components: a filter/heater/air conditioning main unit, a condenser unit for air conditioning and a pressurizer unit.

A cowl unit is one with full-width enclosing bodywork, similar to the cab unit style of earlier locomotives, but unlike the cab unit style, the bodywork is merely a casing and is not load-bearing.
