Cabanglasan is two hours away, by car, from Malaybalay, the state capital of Bukidnon.
Cabanglasan, the village where I stayed, stands on the border between areas of immigrant people and indigenous people.

THE presence of Japanese stragglers in Bukidnon area is not a remote possibility, an author of a World War II book said as he urged the government to exert effort in locating the Japanese soldiers.
The journey traversed the mountain areas of Silai onward to Cabanglasan, Bukidnon then crossing the Pulangi and toward Agusan del Sur, he said.
Nagaki, a native of Bohol who was married to a Japanese, claimed she met with some contacts who were foresters in 2002 and later wanted to negotiate with the Japanese Embassy for Sakurai's return to his homeland.

Bukidnon is a large province (8,294 square km) containing several plateaus that are separated by deep canyons and three major river valleys --the Pulangi, Tagoloan, and Cagayan.
Bukidnon is the only province in Mindanao that does not have a coast line, it being in the north central part of the island.

HISTORICAL GROWTH OF POPULATION Cabanglasan was created to become a municipality on August 13, 1979 by virtue of Republic Act 6489.
On the following year, 1980, a regular census on population and housing was conducted nationwide, wherein Cabanglasan had an actual population count of 16,843.
During that year, Cabanglasan had a population of 29,288 or an increase of 11.15%.

PHYSICAL PROFILE The Municipality of Cabanglasan was once blessed by numerous natural resources including abundant forest.
It is geographically located between East longitude 125 degrees 27 minutes and North latitude 8 degrees and 3 minutes.
Five barangays, namely; Anlugan, Cabanglasan proper, Iba, Mandaing and Dalacutan are located within A&D land while the remaining 5 barangays such as; Cabulohan, Capinonan, Imbatug, Paradise and Mauswagon are located within both timberland and A&D. Cabanglasan has a total aggregate area of 26,230 hectares based on the Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) map.

Of the three systems in Bukidnon Province, the systems in Kalilangan and Lantapan encountered several technical problems during construction, problems which could have been partly avoided if the feasibility studies had been better executed and more closely supervised.
For example, some LGUs, such as Iligan City in Lanao Norte and Malaybalay City in Bukidnon withdrew from the project and decided to "go-it-alone" on the mistaken assumption that the feasibility study by itself was adequate to attract private sector financing.
The only private company that stayed with the project (in the Bukidnon cluster) was carefully checking all aspects of the system to ensure that the project breaks even throughout the concession period.

The Pulangi Watershed Integrated Community-based Resource Management Project or PULWIN was established in 2001 to build self-reliant and sustaining communities in the Upper Pulangi Watershed in Bukidnon.
The project targets six areas in the eastern Mt. Tago, Kiamo and Man-umino ranges straddling Malaybalay City and the municipality of Cabanglasan in Bukidnon province.
Because our partner communities are located in the Upper Pulangi and Upper Tagoloan areas, both of which have been declared as critical watersheds in Bukidnon, our efforts have the support of the provincial and municipal government units of Bukidnon.

Belderol-Nagaki wrote the Japanese government last year claiming to have met a certain Sakurai, a supposed Japanese Imperial Army soldier, in Cabanglasan town, Bukidnon province.
She also said that she was unable to "see" Sakurai in their supposed meeting three years ago because it was held at dawn.
When pressed for further information, Belderol-Nagaki claimed that Sakurai, believed to be around 80 years old at the time of their meeting, had walked the entire distance from Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, to Cabanglasan, Bukidnon.

In a deliberation conducted by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office-Bukidnon in Malaybalay City, it was found out that the certificate of lumber origin (CLO) was not genuine and the signatures were forged.
The truck was owned by a certain Evangeline P. Costelo of Crossing Mandaing, Cabanglasan, Bukidnon.
Padilla, the attorney-in-fact, denied the irregularities, saying that he was shown with the accompanying CLO and did not know that the truck would be used to transport illegal forest products.

A bulk of these government-issued loans went to Bukidnon, where an estimated 20 percent of total harvests went to waste last year owing to the lack of corn shelling, drying, storage and other post-harvest facilities.
The loans were released by the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corp. (Quedancor), under the Agrikulturang MakaMASA program of the Department of Agriculture (DA), to two cooperatives and a technology center.
"Recent estimates by the DA showed that 20 percent of the total grains produced in Bukidnon for 1998 were unnecessary destroyed due to inadequacy or lack of access to corn shelling, drying and storage spaces," the Quedancor reported.
