Set in the great city of Berlin in 1931, a time of economic depression and political crisis, this movie constructs an image of the decadence and delusion of the late Weimar period as German society is plunging through a kind of moral and social decay into the nightmare of Nazism.
The Nazis themselves liked to contrast the supposed "healthy" vitality of a romanticized rural and small-town Germany against the decadence of urban Berlin, a point that is made in the film when young Nazi youth leaders at a beer garden lead an increasingly Nazified crowd to join in song celebrating nature and the volk.
Cabaret the movie doesn't share many songs in common with the original stage version - it still has "Willkommen," "Two Ladies," "Tomorrow Belongs To Me," a German version of "Married," "If You Could See Her," and "Cabaret" - but that's it.

  Michael York: Cabaret - Movie
The performances in this movie are all incredible; Liza was perfectly cast as Sally, and Michael York is wonderful in his role of Brian.
Unlike the unrealistic musicals of the 40s and 50s in which the characters burst into song out of the middle of nowhere, the musical numbers here are strictly prohibited to stage numbers at the Kit Kat Klub, an alteration from the Broadway version that significantly adds to the reality of this spectacle.
The movie's ending will leave you (as it did me the first time I saw it) in stunned silence, thinking twice about social apathy in the context of the potentially devastating nightmare we are now experiencing at the dawn of the 21st century.

Cabaret Balkan Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Cabaret Balkan", which was a major hit last year in the Former Yugoslavia and went on to win the Best Picture Award at a number of European film festivals, was originally slated for North American release in the spring of this year.
Paskaljevic has always been a vociferous opponent of the Milosevic regime and its policies, and in "Cabaret Balkan", he uses a procession of related vignettes to explore the roots of the recent conflicts in the Former Yugoslavia, and how power and violence often go hand-in-hand.
The film opens in the titular Cabaret Balkan, where a garish-looking master of ceremonies lambastes the audience with a monologue that bluntly encapsulates the absurdly comic and perversely-horrific situations that are about to unfold on one night in the decaying city of Belgrade.

Furthermore, the link between the decadence of the cabaret and the Jewish entertainer is strengthened in the character of the master of ceremonies, portrayed spectacularly in the film by Joel Grey.
By the end of the film, though, the cabaret owner has been beaten to death by the Nazis, and the club's entire audience is dominated by Nazi soldiers, proudly wearing their swastika armbands.
Perhaps the real genius of Cabaret is not that it manages to deal with such provocative subjects so well, but that it manages to do it in the frame of the movie musical.

Movie Review: 'Cabaret Balkan' mirrors an anarchic Yugoslavia
And "Cabaret Balkan," R-rated for violence and profanity, is a good reflection of the violence that plagues the place.
Violence is never rational, but some manifestations of it are more insane than others -- Columbine on a small scale, Kosovo on a large one -- and become symbiotic with human relations in a lawless macho society where women on the street are as likely to be raped as greeted.
"Cabaret Balkan" combines elements of "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" (minus the tender moments) with "Pulp Fiction" and Albee-Pinteresque theater of the absurd.

 Cabaret (1972) Movie Review - RopeofSilicon.com
Cabaret is a Warner Bros. release directed by Bob Fosse and was released on February 13, 1972.
Minnelli commands the screen as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, who radiantly goes on with the show as the Nazis rise to power, holding her many male admirers (including Michael York and Helmut Griem) at a distance that keeps her from having to bother with genuinely deep emotions.
Director-choreographer Fosse achieves a finely tuned combination of devastating drama and ebullient entertainment, and the result is one of the most substantial screen musicals ever made.
