CABARROGUIS, Quirino - The bodies of 10 Quirino villagers who went missing at the height of super howler "Paeng" were retrieved here over the weekend, bringing to 25 the total number of typhoon casualties in Cagayan Valley, with 14 others still missing.
Besides the death toll, Quirino, an inner province bordered by Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela and Aurora, also suffered at least P100 million in crop losses and damage to infrastructure, including at least five major concrete bridges in Aglipay, Maddela and Nagtipunan towns.
Based on the damage assessment report of the local disaster coordinating council and the Department of Public Works and Highways, Quirino Rep. Junie Cua said stretches of the national highway in the province were either cut off or covered with mountain debris during the typhoon.

CABARROGUIS, Quirino – Allaying fears about the risks posed by a gold and copper mine project in the upland barangay of Didipio at the border of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Cagayan Valley said it would not threaten the irrigation water flowing downstream.
The project straddles the mountainous boundaries of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino, where people rely mainly on rice farming, alluvial gold panning and slash and burn (kaingin) agriculture to keep their bodies and souls together.
The immediate vicinity of the project area and a big swath of the valley were denuded by logging concessionaires in the 1970s.

Apart from learning to plant IBP 911 using the 2-row male and 4-row female pattern, farmer-cooperators were also taught the use of herbicides.  In addition, UPLB experts led by Fred Seriosa corrected the farmer-cooperators’ practice of cultivating corn plants beyond 30 days of planting as well as proper irrigation of corn plants.
The duroc, on the other hand, is a superior breed in terms of growth rate and feed efficiency.  By putting these breeds’ qualities together through mating, the hybrid vigor of both sow and offspring is maximized.  Consequently, the hogs’ growth efficiency and carcass quality are improved.

"OPERATION Sayote", the relief operation born at the height of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption 12 years ago, has been re-launched, this time targeting calamity victims in Cabarroguis, the capital town of Quirino province that was ravaged by typhoon Harurot.
Project Coordinator Swanny Dicang, said Cabarroguis Mayor David Longid confirmed the massive destruction wrought by the typhoon and appealed for support to enable the victims to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
Dicang said Cabarroguis was chosen as many of its residents have relatives here and in other parts of the Cordilleras.
