Caber toss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are no uniform standards for cabers specifying length, weight, type of wood, density, circumference, etc. In general, the cabers used in competitions vary in all these characteristics with each Highland Games event having their own set of cabers.
Typically, a Highland Games event will have several cabers varying in length and weight, with the longer, heavier implements being used for the Professional or top class event and the shorter, lighter cabers being used for either qualifying for the top class or for the Amateur class.
It is not unusual for a caber to break in the course of a competition.

Helmsdale Highland Games - Events - The Caber
The dimensions of a caber - or cabar in Gaelic - can vary enormously but the norm weighs about 150lbs (68kgs), is 18 feet (5.5m) long and about 9 inches (23cms) thick at one end, tapering to about 5 inches (l3cms) at the other.
The largest caber recorded in the Guinness Book of records is 25ft (7.62m) and 280lbs (127kg).
In some games, if the caber was not thrown, an old-fashioned two-handed, crosscut saw would be brought on and the heavies would saw an inch off the caber until one of them threw it.

Speed is a double-edged sword: the faster you go, the more kinetic energy the caber has (so the less you need to add with the pull), but the less time you have to squat and pull.
One other tip: if the caber is leaning strongly against your shoulder (but not crushing you), you can speed up as much as you like, then squat when you feel like it, rather than suddenly having to squat.
Since the caber has to stand up before it falls forward, you have more time to squat and pull this way.
