Five friends on a vacation deep in the mountains spiral into terror, paranoia, and violence when one is infected with a horrifying and virulent disease--and the others are forced to do everything to ensure their own survival.
So when it came to the sickness, Cabin Fever put the screws to me. We not only have bloody vomit, we have open sores, exposed organs, and a scene in which an ill-considered shave results in the remove of several layers of skin.
Cabin Fever would like to be cut from the same cloth as these films, and it, at times, succeeds.

Cabin Fever depicts the grisly fate of a group of five young city dwellers who decide to spend the final days of their college vacation in a remote country log cabin.
As this brief description of Cabin Fever indicates, the film is an extremely downbeat production that is strongly reminiscent of the most nihilistic horror movies of 1970s.
Even the film's shocking finale, where the locals round up and burn both the innocent and infected outsiders they presume are responsible for the sickness in their community is strongly reminiscent of the negative and ambivalent endings found in many notable American horror films from the seventies.

"Cabin Fever" is completely -- and quite cleverly -- contrived, a cascade of stupid mistakes and miscommunication stirred into a visceral stew of gooey blisters and flaying layers of bloody flesh.
It turns too cynically contrived for its own good in a glib coda that winks at the audience with a sour smirk, but that's a minor criticism in an otherwise smartly made horror film that delivers the goods with old-fashioned gusto and modern ingenuity.

The Log Cabin Republicans, who watched conservatives attempt and fail to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, are having trouble endorsing Bush for a second round.
