Topic: Cabinet (file format)

Delphi 3 file types with descriptions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The cabinet format has two key features: multiple files can be stored in a single cabinet (.cab file) and data compression is performed across file boundaries, which significantly improves the compression ratio.
Cabinet file construction can be designed around the number of files to be compressed and the expected patterns for gaining access to them (sequential, random, all at once, or a few at a time).

Windows CE installation cabinet (.CAB) file format
The filenames of the files in the cabinet use the MS-DOS "8.3" convention, where the first eight characters in the filename come from the "true filename", and are followed by a period and three numeric digits.
All other files are files for installation on the Windows CE device, and the three digits should be resolved into an integer "file number".
The file for installation is the file in the cabinet which has this integer as a three digit file extension.

The Format Characterization Problem Digital library programs for long-term preservation of digital materials require a strong typing mechanism in order to characterize effectively the structural and semantic properties, or data format, of those materials for purposes of validation, presentation, monitoring for obsolescence, transformation, and interchange.
The determination of the syntax of format identifiers requires that careful consideration be given to questions of semantic opacity, transcribability, and susceptibility to encoding in other identification schemes such as URIs, cf.
Beyond the core format specification, many other descriptive attributes could be usefully registered in the areas of structural and semantic characterization, tool support, and internal registry administration.

SNP File Format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The SNP file format is used by Microsoft Access to store Report Snapshots in a single file which can be viewed and printed by the Microsoft Snapshot Viewer, available as a free download from Microsoft.
SNP files are based on the Microsoft Compound File Binary Format (CFBF), which is also the basis for the Advanced Authoring Format (AAF)[1].
Since CFBF files are not compressed, Microsoft's CAB format is used to reduce the size of the CFBF, resulting in a compact file format which may be only a few kilobytes in size for each page of text and simple graphics - lines, boxes, etc.
