  DVDFILE.COM: Nights Of Cabiria review
Fellini himself once said that he still worried about the character of Cabiria, and such is the impact of her character as played by Masina.
Cabiria is the type of person you laugh at while you feel sorry for her.
As good as Nights of Cabiria is, and as glad as I am to have it in my collection, Criterion should have priced it at the lower price point reserved for lesser titles with few or no supplements ($29.95).

New York State Writers Institute - Nights of Cabiria
Masina's Cabiria is a prostitute, and the film begins with a petty street crime; her purse is stolen, and she is thrown into the Tiber.
Her near-drowning forces Cabiria to reconsider her life, and her question, "What if I had died?" is the beginning of a quest for meaning in a life that seems initially to lack moral justification.
Cabiria meets a movie star, the object of her veneration, and he is immediately made a stand-in for one of Fellini's most characteristic themes: the director's paradoxical love for Church ritual and simultaneous ridicule of religious hypocrisy.

Giulietta Masina, as Cabiria, is very good; she is able to make us forget that this certainly is not a genuine depiction of a prostitute.

Of course a prostitute is always acting in one way or another, but Cabiria seems to have a character in mind--perhaps Chaplin's Little Tramp, with a touch of Lucille Ball, who must have been on Italian TV in the 1950s.
Or perhaps this actually is Cabiria and not a performance: Perhaps she is a waiflike innocent, a saint among the sinners.
``Nights of Cabiria,'' directed by Masina's husband, Federico Fellini, in 1957, won her the best actress award at Cannes, and the film won the Oscar for best foreign picture--his second in a row, after ``La Strada'' in 1956 (he also won for ``8 1/2'' in 1963 and ``Amarcord'' in 1974).

Nights of Cabiria Movie Review by Anthony Leong
The protagonist of the film is Cabiria (played by Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina), a scrappy and tough-talking streetwalker whose seemingly tough exterior hides her emotional insecurity.
On the other hand, she also brings an unconquerable joie de vivre to Cabiria actions, whether it be mamboing on the spur of the moment, or trying her best to blend in to a 'fish out of water' situation.
Finally, "Nights of Cabiria" shines for its deeply personal perspective-- at the heart of this film is one woman's fierce struggle to free herself from the relative safety of self-imposed isolation, and her inadvertent self-discovery of the courage that lies within.

CABIRIA, essentially, is the first Fellini film I've seen that allows the camera to act as a silent, entirely objective narrator, letting events play out naturally, as they would in real life (given the particular circumstances of the film).
CABIRIA is also routed heavily in psychological realism, which, in large part, is due to its lack of 'types' and its absence of heightened reality.
