A cable length is a (Click link for more info and facts about nautical) nautical (An organization regarded as part of a larger social group) unit of measure, for which at least four definitions seem to exist:
Common definition: 1/10 (A unit of length used in navigation; equivalent to the distance spanned by one minute of arc in latitude; 1,852 meters) nautical mile, i.e.
The unit is named after the length of a ship's " (A conductor for transmitting electrical or optical signals or electric power) cable".

Cable impedance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
If the cable length is an extremely large number of wave-lengths at the frequency of that AC signal, and you measure the ratio of AC Voltage to AC current in that traveling wave, then that ratio is called the characteristic impedance of the cable.
For ordinary coaxial cable used at reasonable frequency, the characteristic impedance depends on the dimensions of the inner and outer conductors, and on the characteristics of the dielectric material between the inner and outer conductors.
In a nut shell the characteristic impedance of a coax cable is the square root of (the per unit length inductance divide by the per unit length capacitance).

Offering enough length between the first two connectors to actually be able to USE the first connector, even in the top bay of the typical home PC.
Total cable length is not obscene and the rounded cable "look" does add a touch of class to the enclosure.

Effects of multiple crimps and cable length on reflection signatures from long cables.
Crimp lengths varied from 12 mm (1 grip width) for the shortest cable, as shown by the right cable in FIGURE 2B, to 48 mm (4 grip widths) for the longest cable.
The actual length of each cable was determined as the distance from the pulse source to the cable end, marked by a near vertical upward reflection at a horizontal scale of 1 ft/div.
As the cable length increases, the crimps must necessarily be longer for identification, and a combination of these two factors produces signal reflections that correspondingly become wider.

 Does cable length matter?
The cable probably was not made correctly, the wrong kind of cable and/or plugs were used to make it, or it was not installed correctly.
If all three cables were made wrong or with the wrong components, the short ones may still work and the long one not work (see http://duxcw.com/faq/network/ends.htm).
If all of these conditions are meant and the cable and plugs have been carefully inspected, flip a coin, cut the plug off one end of the cable, replace it, inspect it, and test the cable again.

HTGuide Forum - different length speaker cable...
I was read an engineers review of this subject and it prooved to be very interesting...essentially for you to notice any difference in cable lenght you'd have to have several miles worth of difference and not move your head an inch either way..basically its a simply not an issue to worry about.
In a speaker cable we don't care about capacitance because it's a low impedance interface, but reactance caused by the wires inductance is important and is additive by the foot.
The difference between a foot long cable and a 50 foot cable would have the longer cable acting as a low pass filter.

 Ethernet Cable length Specifications
This limitation results from the timing of the Ethernet signals on the cable and not necessarily the cable characteristics, and is, therefore, a "hard" number.

10 meters (33 ft.) is allowed for the total length of patch cords and cross connect jumpers in a horizontal channel.

Custom length IDE cable (HD, CD/DVD, Floppy) - MP3Car.com Forums
The maximum length for an IDE cable allowed by the ATA/IDE Standard is 18 inches; and that is the length of the cable that is supplied with most drives.
In some cases, this 18-inch length may not be long enough to span the distance from the motherboard or IDE controller to the drive bay in which the drive is being installed.
Although it’s possible to obtain or make a custom IDE cable with a length exceeding 18 inches, be aware that the devices attached to such a cable might not operate properly due to noise and/or signal attenuation.
