Cable select - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cable select is a setting on IDE devices such as hard drives and CDROM that allows the position of the drive on the cable to select whether the drive will act as master or slave.
Pin 28 on an IDE cable is used to decide the fate of the device.
Cable select is often used when people are frequently switching around drives (e.g.

Cable select is intended to save the hassle of changing jumpers, but it can actually force the much bigger hassle of physically relocating the drive in the case.
Cable select is an interesting idea, but it has never caught on and I don't think it is likely that it will, primarily because of inertia.

What is Cable Select and How Do I Configure my Seagate ATA Drive to Use It?
Cable Select can save time during the assembly process for large volume system integrators and is quickly becoming the industry default setting for new drive shipments.
Both Cable Select and Master/Slave settings are made using jumpers on the options jumper block of the device ( typical Seagate ATA drive shown).
Cable Select settings (pins 5-6) require specific placement of the master and slave device on the cable according to which type of cable is used.

Info: Cable Select Jumpering   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
CSEL jumpering requires a special IDE cable with pin 28 not connected to one of the drive connectors, that would configure the drive attached to that connector as the slave drive.
Although the Cable Select specification may simplify things in the future, there will probably be lots of confusion, especially on legacy systems, as this starts to be introduced.
Pin 28 may be nonconnected to the connector at the end of the cable or to the connector in the middle of the cable.

To use cable select, both devices on the channel are set to the "cable select" (CS) setting, usually by a special jumper.
Since cable select was never accepted in the industry, most drives come, by default, with the drive jumpered as a master or single drive.

 Storage: cable select versus master/slave
"cable select" is an alternate method of selecting master and slave.
A special cable, which can be identified by the presence of a hole shorting some of the wires near the middle connector, is used in a 'cable select' scenario to alleviate builders of the need to move jumpers around.
Doing so allows you to use either position on the cable for the master which might be helpful if the cable is only so-long.

Why use 80 wire cables?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
All rounded cables are 80-wire, and they have the added benefit that, because of their profile, they dramatically improve airflow within the system case and assist with system cooling.
And while all 80-wire cables are suitable for use with ‘Cable Select’; drives, that’s not the case with 40 wire drive cables.
For the drives to be attached the correct way on the cable, wire 28 needs to be disabled between the motherboard connector and the middle connector, and then ‘shorted’ to wire 40 between the middle connector and the end connector.

[TweakNews.net Forum] :: View topic - Round IDE Cable.... Cable Select?
Cable select is NOT superior in any way to master / slave jumper settings, and I have experienced huge problems with CS if the drive controller is run outside of even a narrow range of it's rated speed.
That aside, I have worked as computer technician for large companies a number of times in the past, and regardless of what you may belive about cable select, I've delt with a number of problems relating to the CS setting which was the default setting on some of the machines.
Cable select DOES work, and it can seem like it causes no problems, and if you have a problem like random crashing or CD drives suddenly being lost from within windows, it would seem that it has little or nothing to do with the CS setting.

Actually all it is, is a cable with the "CSEL" wire cut before one of the drive connectors.
You can make one if you want, form a noraml cable, just cut wire #28 before the last connector, and that will go to the "slave" drive, the middle connector is "master" and the other end goes to the mobo.

 Using IDE Cable Select
All IDE drives have jumpers that select the "master" or "slave" role on the controller, but modern drives also have a "CS" or "Cable select" pin.
This allows the IDE cable itself to select the drive's role: all the drives have the CS jumper set, and the cable chooses the master and the slave.
Modifying an IDE cable to properly put the master on the far end means that the far end pin 28 is grounded and the middle connector pin 28 has to float.
