At the northern end of the cablecar, it is only a few yards to walk to the Torre Vasco da Gama, a 140 metre tower, from which excellent views of the whole area, including the Ponte Vasco da Gama, may be had.
The cablecar gives excellent views of the Expo 98 site, the new Vasco da Gama bridge, which reaches 11km across the Tagus, as well as of the Vasco da Gama tower, a revolving restaurant.

 Two trapped in mid-air for 7hrs
Apparently a cablecar on top of the mountain was "derailed" by a gust of wind and crashed into the cable station.
Karlien Eveleigh, who went up the mountain in a cablecar with husband Fred shortly before the accident, said they heard a loud bang minutes after disembarking and saw the top cablecar crash into the cable station.
Less than two years ago, two people were seriously injured after the cablecar in which they were travelling fell 18m to the ground when it slipped off the cable.

THE 90 SKIERS who found themselves in the Grande-Motte cablecar, on the Tignes glacier, will long remember the terrifying experience they lived through when the cablecar was derailed close to the top station, at an altitude of 3,450 metres.
The cablecar was therefore derailed as it arrived at the last pylon.
The cablecar remained firmly attached to the former, and there was no collision with the pylon.

It is with deepest sorrow that the IRAM Direction and the IRAM Partner Organisations (CNRS, IGN, MPG) have to announce the loss of 20 lives, caused by a terrible accident that hit the cablecar at the Plateau de Bure.
The cablecar has been under regular maintenance by a dedicated IRAM team, and under supervision by the official safety authorities.
For IRAM and its Partner Organisations it is absolutely essential that the cause of this terrible accident be found as soon as possible.
