Zoom Telephonics: Cable Frequently Asked Questions
A CableModem is a device that connects your computer to the Internet - in much the same way your cable set top box connects your TV to the television network.
Once the CableModem is turned on and registered with the cable service provider, you will enjoy an "always on" connection with no need to dial up or hang up.
The Zoom CableModem requires very little power and can be placed in a standby mode that preserves registration with the cable service but drops cable connectivity to the computer or network.

Dranch's Home Page - Cablemodem connectivity
The state of the Cablemodem industry: This excellent article from USA Today sheds light on the state of cablemodems and why the industry barely exists today (if ever).
This style of cablemodem design is only good for the occasional internet surfer that downloads far more data than they upload.
Putting it very generically, the cablemodem is just like an analog modem using a MUCH larger bandwidth to transmit and receive data over a different connection.

Cablemodem download and upload speeds (followup)
From cablemodem supporters, I had heard that the MCNS standard actually supports about 40MB of downstream bandwidth (I do not use an MCNS-compliant cablemodem, though).
The most notable complaint I heard was from DSL supporters, who stated that one of the differences between DSL and cablemodems is that as more customers began to use cablemodems in a neighborhood, the downstream bandwidth per customer would suffer.
I had thought that upstream bandwidth on my cablemodem was much higher than what the results show (the results show upstream bandwidth being pretty consistent, around 140-150 Kilobits per second, or roughly the same bandwidth as three simultaneous 56Kb modems).

 The Cablemodem Server Solution
What this means is, along with receiving very fast cablemodem access for your PC, you can host your own webserver, for the price of the former (for me, that's $32/month for what peaks out at 650K/sec or better).
I had been looking into a co-location situation (about $100/month) and the cost of an ISP with sufficient harddrive space (at least one gigabyte; about $300/month) and found these to be too much to pay, without the benefits of easy transfers from my non-linear editor computer to the server.
Acquire cablemodem access through your local cable company and get your computer working with it; (for me, $32/month over my normal cable TV bill).

Have cablemodem, want to connect to exclusive OTA (ie. no cable) - AVS Forum
To do this, I was thinking, I would 'tee' off the incoming connection (from the street), and connect the OTA antennas, while maintaining the cable modem connection service.
This may involve installing another cable dedicated to the cable modem and then use the built in wiring in the house for OTA distribution.
Cablemodem w/out the cable-tv is another $5, ie.

Once the computer gets that IP, the first webpage that loads is one that does provisioning of the IP for the computer (basically registering the IP with the MAC address of that computer's network device).
The AP is not given an IP from the cablemodem, it is given a manual IP that is only for private internal networks.
Nothing that required gaining an IP from a cablemodem, only from a DHCP server on the other side of the AP (which worked like a charm).

CableModem service was installed today, and on two of the three boxes on the LAN - good stuff!
And protocols are ok. The thing is, DSL was (and is now) operating on this box (and now the whole network again) as well as it usually does.
Late last night, I connected the CableModem directly to my main machine (Win98, AMD-K62-400, 512M ram, Voodoo3 3k, 3Com NiC) - and it was great.

Some Recent Changes to Comcast Cablemodem billing
At that time, I purchased my own cablemodem from CompUSA for about $200 (thinking there might be a problem with the one I was "renting" from Comcast) and also had a technician come to my house.
If you want more information about my new cablemodem and the work that the technician did, see this summary about this process here.
If I were still renting a cablemodem from them, I'd have to pay an *additional* $5.00 per month (but there indeed was no separate charge for cablemodem rental).
