The area around the Caboolture River was called by the Brisbane Aborigines, Kabul-tur, meaning the place of the carpet snakes because these reptiles were plentiful in the area.
George Raff of Brisbane bought some of the land held by the failed Caboolture Cotton Company and called it Moray Field although it was often written as Morayfields.
When a banana plantation was established there and the railway line went through it gained the name of Wamuran after a local Aboriginal leader known by the whites also as Jackie Delaney.

The Caboolture area was settled in 1842 when the land around the Moreton Bay penal colony was opened up to free settlers.
The local shire was constituted in 1879 and in 1888 the railway line from Brisbane was opened.

The remaining major rail project is a $A 500 million extension of the Gold Coast line from Robina to Coolangatta, which also includes capacity enhancements from Ormeau to Coomera, Helensvale to Robina, and a third track from Salisbury to Kuraby.
A planned new line west of Brisbane to link with a proposed route from Melbourne is being given support by the government, but detailed proposals have not yet been made.

The fork line with a gradient of 1 in 20, was provided to turn the disastrous McKeen Rail Cars (1913-1931), which were generally permitted to run with passengers in the Forward direction only.
The fork line was later found to be too steep for the low powered cars, particularly with a trailer attached, and as a result the gradient of the fork line was eased to a gradient of 1 in 25, 4 months after construction.
The fork line was out of use by December 1950, with eventual removal occurring by 1963, leaving only the refuge as a legacy of the failure of QGR's first venture into Rail Motors.

The only other line which can reasonably be classified as a main route is the North Coast line from Brisbane up to Cairns.
