The eastern two-thirds of the County consists of nearly level alluvial fans, flat plains, and basins, while the western third is largely composed of rolling terraces and steep uplands used for dry-farmed grain and range.
Yolo County was one of the original 27 counties created when California became a state in 1850.
In 1906, to further emphasize agriculture's role in Yolo County, the University of California chose a 780-acre farm belonging to Jerome Davis for establishment of a university farm to serve as part of the College of Agriculture.

The Yolo County General Plan was first adopted in 1958, as part of a Master Plan that included both the unincorporated area and the cities of Davis, Winters, and Woodland.
As indicated by recent sharp increases in housing costs, Yolo County is currently experiencing a strong demand for new housing, not only for local families, but for the growing number of residents who commute to jobs in the Sacramento and Bay Area regions.
As a part of their study, SACOG is projecting that Yolo County's share of regional growth may add as many as 78,000 new housing units over the next fifty years, along with 99,000 new jobs.

The appropriation law, under which the Yolo County people secured their claim, was enacted into law in 1873, during the dispute between the hydraulic miners, establishing the right of the first to file for water.
Later, when the Yolo County people were preparing to construct their present dam on Cache Creek, approached the Lake County Board of Supervisors, asking if Lake County was interested in the lake water.
In appropriating this water it was necessary for the Yolo Water and Power Company to show that this water was available for appropriation and that it would be put to beneficial use, which in their case was the irrigation of lands in Yolo County.

Cache Creek offers visitors spectacular views of the threatened bald eagle, free-roaming tule elk herds, wild turkey, fl bear, fltail deer and other upland species.
You may see elk in the Wilson Valley portion of Cache Creek; or one mile west of the entrance, near the gravel pit on Highway 20; or near the junction of Highways 20 and 16.
Access to the majority of the Cache Creek area is limited to foot traffic, equestrian use and mountain bikes.

At least one Putah Creek farmer in the 1920s was reputed to have fed his workers sturgeon and other fish caught in the creek.
The Clear Lake hitch, distinct from the form in Putah and Cache creeks, is in decline through alteration of its spawning streams, introduction of competing species into the lake (such as threadfin shad), and random violence performed on spawning fish by some local residents.
The return of chinook salmon to spawn successfully in lower Putah Creek in the 1990s, thanks to water provided by a series of wet years, has been one of the defining events in the creek's restoration.

Most Cache Creek rapids do not require scouting, but because of its unusual severity, first-timers should stop during the shuttle at the highway bridge that crosses from south to north bank, where you can get a good view of Rowboat Rapid (class III).

Parking at the Bear Creek confluence is tight, and access is poor except for outfitters, who have a key to the locked gate.
