Cactus poaching and the legal harvesting of species of cacti, including rare flowering species, in the expansive Chihuahuan Desert in the Southwestern United States and into Mexico are endangering rare species of the native plants, disrupting the ecosystem, and depriving wildlife of natural habitats.
Cactus collecting, including that for landscaping and by "cactophiles" who seek rare specimens for their collections, is popular in Europe and Japan and has become a multi-million-dollar industry, the WWF said.
Among the protected species is the bunched cory cactus (Coryphantha ramillosa) that occurs in limited areas of Texas in southern and southeastern Brewster and southwestern Terrell counties, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA).

It had a post office in operation from 1884 until 1916 and although a school enrolled as many as 45 students in 1907, the overall population of the town proper never went over fifty after 1892.
By the end of the 1940s there was only 25 people in Cactus and for the years 1968 through the early 1990s, there were no figures available.

As production at the Cactus plant and five others in five states resumed Wednesday, residents in Cactus began taking donations of food, diapers and other necessities for children of employees who were arrested Tuesday.
Cactus City Commissioner Lovera Kitchens McGill said she supports the enforcement effort because of the social problems she says illegal immigration causes, including lower wages for legal workers and rising education costs.
