Cad Goddeu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cad Goddeu (English: The Battle of the Trees) is a sixth century Welsh poem from the Book of Taliesin.
It is set during a battle fought between Gwydion and Arawn, the god of the underworld, Annwn, in which Gwydion animates the trees of the forest to fight for him.
John Williams used a version of Cad Goddeu translated into Sanskrit for the score to the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Trees, Battle of the - ErrantryWiki
The better-known version tells how the Welsh wizard, warrior and prince Gwydion became involved in an obscure battle which was either called Câd Goddeu, "the Battle of Trees", or Câd Achren -- "Achren" being one of the many names for the underworld or alternate universe ruled by Prince Arawn, the lord of the dead.
Scholars do not agree on the causes of the battle -- some say that it was a raid on the otherworld during which Gwydion intended to bring back for the use of mankind three valuable creatures (the dog, deer and lapwing bird) which he felt the Lord of the Otherworld was unfairly withholding from humanity.
The Câd Goddeu poem describes the great wizardry by which Gwydion brought the trees to life and sent them into battle to fight for humanity's sake against the forces of death.

The White Goddess   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The waxing and waning of the king’s life is likened to the yearly path of the sun, poetically embodied by tree-months as being sacred symbols of divine attributes.
Upon death the king’s spirit dwells in Her Celestial abode, which in Celtic lore is depicted as Caer Arianrhod and as the constellation Corona Borealis, the silver-wheeled castle at the back of the north wind, near the pole-star or ‘Celestial hinge’.
The most significant result of the Câd Goddeu was a change from the secret five/seven-vowel name of the White Goddess to an eight-lettered one of a supreme male father-god.

In Cad Goddeu both heaven and earth flee before the “darts of the oak,” and Sweeney calls it “high beyond trees.” Fionn refused to kill a king who was resting under an oak.
According to Cad Goddeu it is “most exalted above the power of kings.” This strong wood, now famous as the baseball bat, was noted by Sweeney as being “baleful,” the warriors hand weapon.
In the Cad Goddeu, the hazel is “esteemed for the number in its quiver.” Sweeney’s comments are limited to the fragrance of the

Duel of the Fates is a musical theme recurring in the Star Wars prequels.
This symphonic piece resembles Carmina Burana and is played with both a full orchestra, as well as choir that chants an ancient Welsh poem Cad Goddeu (Battle of the Trees) in Sanskrit.
In English, a translation attempting to keep the rhythm and rhyme would be "Under the tongue root a fight most dread, and another raging behind, in the head."

But my profession is poetry, and I agree with the Welsh minstrals that the poet's first enrichment is a knowledge and understanding of myths.
One day while I was puzzling out the meaning of the ancient Welsh myth of Câd Goddeu ('The Battle of the Trees'), fought between Arawn King of Annwm ('The Bottomless Place'), and the two sons of Dôn, Gwydion and Amathaon, I had much the same experience as Gwion of Llanfair.
A drop or two of the brew of Inspiration flew out of the cauldron and I suddenly felt confident that if I turned again to Gwion's riddle, which I had not read since I was a schoolboy, I could make sense of it.

One of the major sources Graves relies on to support his tree calendar in the White Goddess is the D. Nash translation of the Cad Goddeu or Battle of the Trees, a poem written in Middle Welsh and attributed to Taliesin.
He claims to have discovered the 'true' order in which the trees are arrayed and his calendar is based on this poetic intuition.
In the columns below I have placed Graves intuitive interpretation of the Cad Goddeu between the Nash and Williams translations, so you may compare the three texts and come to your own conclusions in regards to accuracy, or lack thereof, of Graves intuition.

The 13 months of the Celtic calendar were also named for some of these trees.
One of the sources for the list of the sacred trees and the Celtic “tree alphabet” was a body of poems related to the Cad Goddeu (“battle of the trees”) legend, in which trees mobilized themselves and attacked an enemy (Graves, 1966).
The hypothesis presented by Graves concerning the order of the trees is that it was based on an order of botanical events in a particular geographical area (i.e.
