Cadarache is a research center of the CEA (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique).
Located in Saint-Paul-Lez-Durance (Bouches-du-Rhône), the CEA research center of Cadarache, created on 14th October 1959, is forty kilometers north of Aix-en-Provence and is at the crossroads of four departments (Alpes de Haute-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Vaucluse).
The activities of the CEA research center of Cadarache are shared out among several technological R&D platforms, essentially devoted to nuclear energy (fission and fusion), but also to new technologies for energy and studies on the effects of radiation on plant life (plant ecophysiology and microbiology).

The Cadarache plant fuel fabrication capacity reaches 40 tons of MOX fuels per year, of which 10 tons are FBR fuels.
Mechanical and electric buildings for the development of different components (pumps) and equipment, the overall assembly and the maintenance of the embarked hardware are also at Cadarache, as well as a fuels workshop for the entire prototype engines and for the series equipping the SNLE, SNA and the aircraft carrier Charles of Gaulle.

 Uranium Enrichment and Fuel Fabrication - Current Issues (France)
The Cadarache mox fuel factory, which has been instructed to cease its activity because it does not comply with seismic safety regulations, is expected to close at the end of 2002 or early in 2003, according to the French nuclear safety agency ASN.
A 1994 survey showed that the area round Cadarache, near the mouth of the river Rhône, had experienced a "significant growth" of seismic activity since the end of 1993, and that "destructive" earthquakes could be expected to recur once a century.
The increase compensates for the shutdown of the Cadarache MOX fuel plant.

The Cadarache was supported because it satisfies all the technical requirements specified by the international team in charge of the design of ITER, the European Commission said today.
Cadarache already hosts the world’s largest super-conducting fusion experiment Tore-Supra at the CEA Cadarache Research Centre, one of the biggest civil nuclear research centers in Europe.

 Site agreed on for the ITER international fusion device
Agreement has been reached on construction of the ITER (Latin for "the way") international fusion test device: the site for it will be Cadarache in the south of France; Japan has withdrawn its site application for Rokkasho.
This was announced after almost two years of negotiation by the representatives of the parties to the project – Europe, Japan, Russia, the USA, China, and South Korea – in a joint declaration issued in Moscow on 28 June 2005.
As compensation for not providing the ITER site Japan will be granted preferential terms: Japanese industry will be awarded production contracts amounting to 20 per cent of the total, half of this funded by the European contribution.

 Plutonium américain à Cadarache... et petit cadeau de la France
En effet, hier le tribunal de grande instance d'Aix-en-Provence leur avait interdit (réseau Sortir du nucléaire et Greenpeace) de s'approcher à moins de 100 mètres du convoi et/ou d'entraver le transport de plutonium sous peine de 50 000 euros d'amende par infraction constatée.
Par ailleurs, selon une déclaration du ministre de l'intérieur, D. de Villepin, les mesures de sécurité qui ont encadré l'arrivée et le transport du plutonium américain, jusqu'à Cadarache, sont intégralement prise en charge par la France.
Dans l'usine de Cadarache, les 140 kilos de plutonium américain vont servir à la fabrication de crayons de combustible MOX (mélange d’oxydes d’uranium et de plutonium), lequel sera livré aux Etats-Unis début 2005.
