Article about cadaver dog training methodology - written by Jonni Joyce.
In teaching cadaver work, I utilize a step-by-step process that takes a beginner dog and teaches him the ability to reliably indicate on the presence of cadaver and teaches the handler how to interpret the information the dog is relaying.
Once the dog is familiar with the scent and a command is attached to the scent, then it is time to build the alert.
Once your dog is capable of offering the trained alert behavior without being commanded in these three scenarios, then we are ready to teach the dog to search for it and extend the search area, time and distance.

Police dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A police dog is a dog that is trained specifically to assist police and similar law-enforcement personnel with their work.
This means that the dog grabs hard, and a fleeing suspect can be bitten when attempting to avoid or fight off a dog and the dog is attempting with full speed and energy to grab the suspect.
For some sniffer dogs in environments where it is perceived that a criminal may attempt to kill the dog to prevent detection, a bodyguard dog is assigned with the sniffer to intimidate and, if necessary, attack anyone who would attack the sniffer.

The Ultimate Working dog Dog Breeds Information Guide and Reference
Herding dogs are still invaluable to shepherds and cattle herders around the world for managing their flocks; different breeds are used for the different jobs involved in herding, and for guarding the flocks and herds.
Dogs that are not to be used for their original purpose must be trained from a young age and are best suited to active persons and families.
Obedience training, dog sports such as flyball, dancing and agility, informal or novelty shows, and trial work are all excellent channels for these breeds' energy; at the very least they must be walked or given other exercise at an appropriate level for the breed, given toys, played with, and provided with human company.

However, prosecutors argue that the dog did not fully alert was because it was distracted by the heavy smell of chemicals in the warehouse.

Trained dogs are able to distinguish between human remains, animal remains, and a wide range of other odors that would normally be expected to distract them.
Canines that detect human remains, commonly referred to as cadaver dogs, have been minimally represented in the law enforcement canine population across the United States.
A search is not merely walking around and permitting the dog to randomly sniff an area, it involves careful fact gathering, analysis and appropriate use of tools that are employed to make existing odor available for detection by the dog.
