The son of King Iago, he assumed the crown of Gwynedd probably around 615, shortly after the Battle of Caerllion (today's Chester), during which the forces of Powys were defeated by Æthelfrith of Bernicia.
Cadfan was generally considered to have been a wise and just ruler, noted for his ability to maintain the rule of law and peace during an increasingly hostile period in British history.
His memorial stone at Llangadwaladr Church in Anglesey refers to him as "Catamanus rex sapientisimus opinatisimus omnium regum" (="King Cadfan the wisest and most renowned of all kings").

Iago ap Beli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most notable feature of his reign (of which little information exists) is the growing strength of the nearby kingdoms of Mercia, under the rule of Pybba and his son Penda, and of Bernicia, under Æthelfrith.
It is not known whether or not Iago took part in this battle: he may have done so, perishing amidst the slaughter, or he may have already abdicated his throne in favor of his son, Cadfan, and died later than year in a monastery.

Determined to be rid of Edwin, Athelfrith attacked Wales, killing the monks at Bangor and defeated and killed King Selyf of Powys at the Battle of Chester.
Iago may not have taken part in this battle, having already abdicated in favor of his son Cadfan and retired to a monastery until his death.

 Edwin of Northumbria Biography
Around the year 604, upon the seizure of Deira by his brother-in-law, Æthelfrith of Bernicia, Edwin was expelled and took refuge with the king of Gwynedd, Cadfan ap Iago.
This may have led to the later quarrel with Cadwallon ap Cadfan, king of Gwynedd.
Edwin is said to have founded the city of Edinburgh in 626, and it is possible that the city was named after him (one interpretation of its etymology is "Edwin's fort").

 Cadwallon ap Cadfan Information
The son and successor of Cadfan ap Iago, he is best remembered for devastating Northumbria and defeating and killing its king, Edwin, prior to his own death in battle against Oswald of Bernicia.
The historian Bede, writing about a century after Cadwallon's death, mentions that Edwin, the most powerful king in Britain, extended his rule to the Isle of Man and Anglesey.
Woolf presents a case against the identification of the Cadwallon mentioned in Bede's history with a son of Cadfan.

 Composite Lives of St Beuno
The one in the genealogies was born in Tegeingl and resided at Holywell.
If so, the fact that Afandreg ferch Cynan was married to Cadfan ap Iago would have naturally led Beuno to visit his brother-in-law in Gwynedd.
Although the St. Beuno of Clynnog is the man intended to be honored by the medieval biographer, both the parentage cited for him and the story of St. Winifred belong to the earlier Beuno of Holywell.

Cadfan is remembered as a wise king, which suggests that not only did he administer the laws justly to his subjects, but that he also succeeded in maintaining peace at a time of growing hostility between the Welsh and the Angles, especially the Northumbrian king ATHELFRITH.
Despite Athelfrith's victory at the Battle of Chester, Cadfan continued to shelter EDWIN, the Northumbrian prince whom Athelfrith was intent on killing.
It is not clear whether his sons pre-deceased him, of whether they died soon after, for their is no record of them attempting to claim the throne of Powys.

While King Athelfrith of Northumbria was victorious, Cadfan continued to offer asylum to the disposed Edwin whom Athelfrith was trying to kill.
