Cadillac Mountain, at 1530 feet, is the highest point on Mount Desert Island.
Though Cadillac is the highest mountain on the island, I chose the North Face Trail as our first hike because it is a gradual climb with few steep spots.
Having 'conquered' the highest mountain on the island was a confidence builder for the students, though they could have no idea that steeper climbs awaited them.

 Cadillac Revisited
It is the only mountain on the island with an auto road to the summit, and, unlike the road on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire, it is an easy drive.
Cadillac is actually low enough and the view clear enough that one loses the sense that one is 1,532 feet above sea level.
The evening we did go up the mountain, however, low clouds were hovering over the mountains to the southwest of Cadillac, and they were, in many respects, more picturesque than the sunset itself, for, after a brief display of color, the sun sank into heavy clouds many minutes before it actually fell behind the horizon.

 Cadillac Mountain Sunrise
It was, in fact, the first I witnessed from the top of Cadillac Mountain, Acadia's highest peak and the first place on the East Coast of the United States that the sun touches each day.
We walked up to the large, flat area that is the summit of Cadillac Mountain, from which, just the day before, we had looked down on the village of Bar Harbor and out to the ocean, dotted with numerous islands.
Beyond the mountain was the expanse of ever-lightening clouds and, beyond that, the sun's slow-motion kaleidoscope.

 Hoarded Ordinaries: Day 1: Cadillac
At the same time, though, it felt wrong to be cranky and antisocial atop Cadillac: families with young children and elderly grandparents deserve to see the tiptop of Acadia as much as able-bodied folks do.
Somehow I sensed that the stones atop Cadillac enjoyed the company, that although they might not like the road that's been slapped on their back, they enjoy the travellers who use that road.
But rather than chiding and deriding those who, like me, drove gas-guzzling vehicles to the top of the mountain rather than walking, biking, or shuttling there, I'd like to think that the meandering band of folks who wandered the summit of Cadillac Mountain yesterday got something more than a few pictures out of the experience.
