Cadiz stands on a peninsula jutting out into a bay, and is almost entirely surrounded by water.
Cadiz was later raided by Sir Francis Drake, in the struggle to gain control of trade with the New World, and managed to withstand a siege by Napoleon's army.
In the early 19th century Cadiz became the bastion of Spain's anti-monarchist, liberal movement, as a result of which the country's first Constitution was declared here in 1812.

Built on what was once an island, Cadiz today has two principal parts: the central or historic quarter with narrow streets and plazas, completely surrounded by fortified walls which constantly bring to mind the city’s maritime history.
Cadiz has close ties with Cuba, partly due to the close relations built up with Havana during the Cuban war of independence when Cadiz was the main port of supply.
The similarities with Havana was one of the reasons why Cadiz was chosen to shoot some of the scenes for the latest Bond film —“Die Another Death”.

Cadiz, whether viewed from land or sea, is a study in white.
Seen from the land, Cadiz appears equally like an island, for it lies at the extremity of a long peninsula, and it is only joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus.
This is hyperbole, but it is no exaggeration for me to say that it was the cleanest city that I saw in Spain, and that the women are as neat and tasteful in their dress, and as pretty, as one would expect to find them in such an exceptional town.

It has long been one the country's principle ports.The city, which was founded by the Phoenicians approximately 1,100 years BC is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is only accessible by the “Puerta de Tierra,” a strip of land that was constructed in 1755 by Torcuato Cayon.
Cadiz is rich in history with various monuments, buildings and museums located throughout the city.
