  Cadmium
About three-fourths of cadmium is used in batteries (especially Ni-Cd batteries) and most of the remaining one-fourth is used mainly for pigments, coatings and plating, and as stabilizers for plastics.
Even though cadmium and its compounds are highly toxic, the British Pharmaceutical Codex from 1907 states that cadmium iodide was used as a medicine to treat "enlarged joints, scrofulous glands, and chilblains".
Consequently, cadmium is produced mainly as a byproduct from mining, smelting, and refining sulfide ores of zinc, and to a lesser degree, lead and copper.

Cadmium induced lipid peroxidation (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance-TBARS) was assayed by means of thiobarbituric acid reaction in fresh red blood cells using a homogeniser (Tri-R Stir-R model K-43) with a teflon pestle at 4°C for 1 min (15,16).
Because of a significant increase in membrane phospholipids cholesterol to phospholipid ratio in the red blood cell membrane was estimated as 2.37±0.37 in cadmium exposed rats (p<0.05) (Figure 2).
Reciprocal changes of blood zinc with cadmium in cadmium exposed rats suggest the presence of disbalance between oxidative and antioxidative capacities in these animals and increased blood TBARS which is an indicator of lipid peroxidation due to increased free radicals was well in accordance with this defective antioxidant capacity.

 handprint : synthetic inorganic pigments
Cadmium deep orange, scarlet and red, creating by adding increasing amounts of selenium (cadmium sulfoselenide, PO20 and PR108), was described in patents of 1892 but not marketed in artists' paints until 1910.
Cadmiums are saturated, semiopaque to opaque (they become less opaque as they dry), lustrous, dense and very smooth (powdery) pigments, expensive but extremely permanent in pure form and if not mixed with lead or iron paints.
Cadmiums are considered mildly to moderately toxic (especially the reds, which also contain selenium) because they can cause poisoning sickness or cancer if eaten or inhaled in large quantities as a pigment powder, sprayed paint, pastel residue, or fumes from heated pigment.

 handprint : red watercolors
Cadmium red PR108 is a very lightfast, opaque, staining, moderately dark to dark valued, moderately dull to very intense orange to deep red pigment.
Cadmium hues can be very precisely adjusted by the proportion of cadmium sulfoselenide in the pigment mixture (a middle red hue is composed roughly of 3 parts cadmium sulfide and 2 parts cadmium sulfoselenide), which allows paint manufacturers to choose their own placement and spacing of hues in the cadmium reds they offer.
If a strong red is important to your palette, it's worth the expense to experiment with a middle or scarlet cadmium red to see if it works for you; if it does, sample the "deep" paints to find the range of hues you prefer.

The Holbein cadmium red orange is a beautiful hue, just at the boundary between orange and scarlet, very similar to pyrrole orange (PO73): a good anchor for the warm side of the warm/cool color contrast.

They are "chemically pure" (C.P.) It would be hard to find any cadmiums in the world more dense than ours.

Helen Torr (known as "Reds" for her flaming tresses) was, as the Graham show amply demonstrates, a painter of skill and distinction.
That she managed to produce work of quality while being all but marginalized by the modernists of the Stieglitz group is even more impressive, considering how much importance she placed in their approbation.
Torr's creative life was profoundly tied to that of her husband's, and her great regret was that Dove did not live to see his work achieve wider recognition.
