Pellinor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She is discovered by Cadvan (one of the great Bards), who reveals to her that she too has "the Gift" of the Bards.
Cadvan soon discovers that her mother was the leader of the first circle of the destroyed School of Pellinor; it was previously assumed that there were no survivors.
Cadvan finds that Maerad's Gift was unusually powerful for one never formally taught; he begins to suspect who Maerad really is. Cadvan takes her to the School of Innail, to make the presence of a survivor from Pellinor known and to make Maerad a minor bard of Pellinor.

Cadvan told her the orange-lipped shells were mussels, so she picked one up and, as Cadvan instructed her, split open the bivalve shell and picked out the flesh.
She hadn't thought of Cadvan having a lover, apart from Ceredin, who had died when he was a young man; but now she did think of it, there was no reason to suppose that he hadn't.
Cadvan and Nerili were simply two Bards, debating questions of high policy, and these subterranean feelings which so disturbed Maerad were but flutterings of her tired mind.

 The Gift
Cadvan left her and Maerad washed for the first time since the day before, gasping at the cold water, and soaked her swollen ankle.
By the time Cadvan returned, ten minutes later, she was already sound asleep with the blanket wrapped around her, the lyre tucked in the crook of her arm like a baby, the food untouched.
Cadvan was sitting with his back to her and turned when she stirred.

When Cadvan was nine years old, the Lirigon Bards, as was the custom, came to Nartan's house to speak about the boy attending the School of Lirigon.
Cadvan had not been allowed in the room when the Bards had been talking, but he knew they were talking about him, and he eavesdropped easily enough, using his listening; what he had heard excited him, and he decided that he wanted to be a Bard more than anything else.
Cadvan saw that the stranger's horse was ill-treated; its mouth was bleeding.

Cadvan considered it a matter of honour to challenge Dernhil to a poetry contest, he was so sure he would prevail, what was the harm in a little self promotion, he thought.
Cadvan’s once stable hold over the revenant slipped, the evil grin that had crept over his faced cracked, in the moment he realised he’d lost control of the creature he’d summoned, all he could see was the fear on Ceredin's face, then the darkness consumed her.

She shook herself, and looked down; Cadvan was staring up at her, but it was as if she looked at him through a veil.
Cadvan made as if he were about to ask her another question, but stopped himself abruptly.

Cadvan was born, the oldest of five children, into a poor family in a small village near Lirigon.
We know that as a young Bard at the School of Lirigon, Cadvan was one of the most brilliant students of Nelac of Lirigon, and that great things were expected of him.
Cadvan met Dernhil of Gent, his other greatest friend, at Lirigon, when he challenged the young but famous poet to a poetry duel - and, to his own chagrin and to the delight of many others, lost.

Geoffrey's legendary Keredic may have been a conflation of Cerdic, the traditional founder of Wessex, who, despite his political affiliation with the Saxons, was likely to be half-British himself, and another Cerdic, who reigned over the Celtic kingdom of Elmet in present day Leeds until his defeat at the hands of Edwin of Northumbria.
Whatever the case, Geoffrey places a lengthy interregnum between the expulsion of Keredic and the rise of the next British king, Cadvan.
