In 1143 Cadwaladr was implicated in the murder of Anarawd ap Gruffydd of Deheubarth, and Owain responded by sending his son Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd to strip him of his lands in the north of Ceredigion.

 Welsh Princes and English Politics
What is often forgotten is that until the coming of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth of Gwynedd (or Llywelyn Prince of Aberffraw and Lord of Snowdon as he called himself from 1230) in the early thirteenth century, there were many princely leaders of many houses in south and mid Wales who played great roles in British history.
It has previously been held that these two men were Madog ap Maredudd of Powys and his brother in law, Cadwaladr of Gwynedd, both of whom were in contact with the earl of Chester.
It is to the credit of the two Llywelyn's of Gwynedd that they generally avoided pitched battles, knowing as they did that their lightly armed troops could not match the heavily armoured might of the Normans.

Owain Gwynedd (in English, "Owen"), alternatively known by the patronymic "Owain ap Gruffydd", is considered to be the most successful of all the north Welsh princes prior to his grandson, Llywelyn the Great.
After the death of the eldest brother, Cadwallon, in 1132, Owain's main ally was his other brother, Cadwaladr, but the latter's misconduct resulted in his exile, and, from 1143, Owain ruled alone over most of north Wales and a significant part of the south.
According to legend, one of Owain's sons was Prince Madog, who is popularly supposed to have fled across the Atlantic and colonised America.

Although Gwynedd remains whole politically, the land within it is divided between Cunedda's surviving sons, who then operate as sub-kings to Einion Yrth.
Gwynedd had survived intense rivalries from within Wales, as well as outside threats from Irish, Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Norman raiders and would-be-conquerors.
It had done so through a combination of might and well-placed diplomacy that nevertheless failed to withstand the final, determined assault from the English in the person of Edward I. Llywelyn is beheaded and the grisly trophy taken by Roger Mortimer of Chirk to Rhuddlan.
