The short version of the Ring's naming is that Ring's father named him after his cousin, Ringgold Wilmer Lardner, with whom he kept in contact and had frequent business dealings.
The Ringgold comes from Rear Admiral Cadwallader Ringgold (20 August 1802 - 29 April 1867), a friend of Rear Admiral James Lawrence Lardner, brother of Ring's grandfather.
The Wilmer, which Ring may have been more uncomfortable with than his first name (He didn't even tell his wife Ellis what the "W" in his name stood for until a couple weeks before their marriage), comes from his grandfather's generation as well.

Ringgold Place Houses were the creation of Walter Allison, a builder/carpenter who is listed in McElroy’s 1861 Philadelphia City Directory as having offices at 24 S. 18th St. and S. 21st St. From the scant materials that exist, it appears that Allison enjoyed a level of prosperity and power in antebellum and Civil War Philadelphia.
By the 1840s builders like Allison were in great demand: medium scale industrial operations fled the dense old core of the colonial city and began situating their works in the undeveloped blocks west of Broad.
The significance of “Ringgold” is unknown, although a Civil War naval officer Cadwallader Ringgold did exist.
