The Caelifera are probably the oldest living group of chewing folivorous insects.
The position of these taxa is discussed in the Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships, and the accessory page 'A Classification of the Caelifera' provides a proposal for a classification down to the subfamily level which takes in account the results of recent morphological and molecular analyses.

Caelifera, a herbivorous insect, is a suborder of the order Orthoptera.
The Caelifera have antennae that are shorter than the body, and short ovipositors.
Taxonomically, Borror and White (1970) note that the hind femora are usually enlarged, tarsi have three segments or less, antennae are relatively short, tympana are usually present on the sides of the first abdominal segment, and the ovipositor is short.

Grasshopper - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Caelifera have antennae that are almost always shorter than the body (sometimes filamentous), and short ovipositors.
The Caelifera are predominantly tropical but most of the superfamilies are represented world wide.
The family is characterised by the short, thickened antennae and relatively unmodified anatomy; they are often visually more striking than other Caelifera, due to the adults' wings and legs, which are well developed and may be brightly coloured.

The various crickets (the Caelifera) have antennae that at least reach their abdomens and normally reach beyond them, the Mole-crickets have the shortest antennae in this group though they are still longer than the Grasshoppers, also Crickets differ in that they have their ears on their fore tibia (front legs).
In the Ensifera mating is fairly straight forward, the male approaches the female and if she is ready to mate the male mounts her and mating takes place, it can last from 20 minutes to several hours and the male may fall off the female and be dragged around on his back by her.
In most of the Caelifera mating is also fairly straight forward, but may be preceded by the couple standing face to face caressing each other with their antennae.

Evolutionary trends in adipokinetic peptides from Odonata and Caelifera
In stark contrast, Caelifera (short-horned grasshoppers) have up to THREE AKH members per species and in this case the majority of species has one decapeptide and one or two octapeptides (although there are some species in which the decapeptide is missing).
Moreover, all known caeliferan decapeptides are very similar in structure and that is true for the known octapeptides as well.
