 GENUKI: A History of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, 1892: Part 8.
The main front, which is of Hare Hill stone, is composed of a magnificent portico, the pediment being supported by a line of eight finely fluted pillars, with enriched capitals, and the loggia, in which are the entrances, is supported in the centre by two circular pillars.
The building, which is entirely of cut stone, is in the Early English style of architecture, and consists of a nave, aisles, transepts, and an apse, or small chancel, with an elegant tower and spire at the west end which rises to a height of 200 feet.
The pulpit is of Cæn stone, tastefully carved, and the lectern (one of the finest in England) is a massive brass eagle, weighing seven cwts.

Thereafter on return to England the Battery was expanded to a regiment again seeing action in Normandy, in the battles for Caen and the Falaise Gap and then the capture of Boulogne and Calais, the clearing of the Scheldt Estuary through to the Siegfried Line.
At the Battle of Knightsbridge between 27th May and 6th June 1942, the South Nottinghamshire Hussars were ordered to stand and fight to the last round and the last man. German tank forces eventually overran the position until virtually the whole Regiment was killed, wounded or captured.
Finally in the battle for the Rhine with the crossing of the Rhine and the eventual capture of Arnhem.

We went to the 1994 Le Mans weekend in it, (pictured here at CAEN ferry port.) The Footman James Retro Runs, and many motorsport events, and many Le Mans.We did a hill climb at Loton and realised we were going to wreck this rather smart car if we were not careful.
This was a picture published by the Shropshire Star, taken at the summer Classic Hill Climb at Loton Park.
Subsequently in the hands of Richard Lightfoot, it won the 2000 Classic Saloon Class of the Midland Hill Climb Championship.

The dead from the battle are buried in the Polish cemetery at Granville-Langannerie, on the road between Falaise and Caen.
The only escape route was across Hill 262 - Montormel - and General Maczek's Polish Armoured Division, part of the Canadian Corps, occupied the positions on Hill 262 North on 19th August blocking the main route for the escaping Germans.
By 22nd August the 4th Canadian Armoured Division finally met up with the Poles, and the fighting was over.
