Topic: Caenogastropoda

Lichtenstein new species   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Accordingly, the species is most likely found in either of these two families and not in Volutidae (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda), which is further supported by the description of strong color bands characteristic for Costellariidae and Mitridae, but rather uncommon in Volutidae.
In this genus many species show the described sequence of a broad orange/brown band, followed by a narrow fl one, then by a white one at the level of the shoulder, and additional red/orange/brown bands: e.g., Vexilum plicarium (Linnaeus, 1758).
The dimensions of 2 1/2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide also agree with such a general identificaton, yet the species cannot be determined.

Abstract: The core group of Euomphalidae with the genera Euomphalus, Straparollus, Serpulospira, Phymatifer, Schizostoma, Nodeuomphalus from Devonian to Permian strata are characterized by a cyrtoconic openly coiled planispiral protoconch.
Throughout existence of the Euomphaloidea other gastropod units developed convergent shell forms which can be detected by the morphology of the protoconch and, in well preserved fossils, the mineralogical and structural composition of the shell.
While the Caenogastropoda of the Orthonemoidea and Pseudozygolpeuroidea continue their development after the Permian- Triassic faunal crisis and even diversify, the Procaenogastropoda of the Soleniscoidea and Peruneloidea disappear.

Abstract: From the Middle Jurassic of northern Germany and northwestern Poland (including the erratic boulders from Middle Jurassic age) 1 species of the Neritimorpha and 30 species of the Caenogastropoda are described.
The described Caenogastropoda have more relationships to already known faunas from the Middle Jurassic of Middle and Western Europa as the Archaeogastropoda and the Heterostropha.
Maturifusus is the oldest known representative of the higher Caenogastropoda (Neomesogastropoda).

Developmental Biology Online: The Role of the Mesentoblast in Gastropod Evolution
In the most derived groups (Caenogastropoda, Pulmonata, and Opisthobranchia) mesentoblast formation is accelerated up to the 24-cell stage.
It appears that the radiation of gastropods from an archaeogastropod-like ancestor, to each of the more derived clades, has been associated with the early specification of the mesentoblast.
It appears that as the gastropods evolved, the specification of the mesentoblast became progressively earlier, and the embryos spent less time in an autonomous mode of development.

Intrahost distribution and trasmission of a new species of cyclopoid copepod endosymbiotic to a freshwater snail, Pomacea canaliculata (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae) from Argentina.
A new species of cyclopoid copepod, Ozmana huarpium, is described as a symbiont to Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck 1822) (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae).
Rather large numbers (about one hundred copepods per snail) were found, although there was no evidence of harm to the host.

It appears that as the gastropods evolved, the specification of the mesentoblast became progressively earlier, and the embryos spend less time in an autonomous mode of development.
The Caenogastropoda and Heterobranchia have emerged as different branches from archaegastropoda, and the Neritimorpha have diverged from the Caenogastropods.
The correlation between evolutionary divergence and the timing of mesentoblast specificity is seen.

The origin and evolution of the gastropod order Neogastropoda was investigated using an iterative, two gene (18S rDNA and cytochrome c oxidase I) approach to phylogeny reconstruction.
Partial sequences spanning approximately 450 base pairs near the 5' end of the 18S rDNA gene confirmed the monophyly of Apogastropoda and its two subclades, the Caenogastropoda (including Neogastropoda and Architaenioglossa) and the Heterobranchia, but were incapable of resolving relationships among neogastropod families, or between Neogastropoda and higher Caenogastropoda.
The monophyly of Heterobranchia is additionally supported by the presence within this group of a large insert of variable length in the 18S rDNA gene in the region corresponding to the E-10-1 helix of the RNA molecule.
