There are another 37 NNRs, which are operated under a lease or through a Nature Reserve Agreement, where we do not act in the capacity of the landowner.
NNRs are often a valuable resource to the community, particularly access for recreation and environmental education, both of which we encourage.
The NNR is being reserved for nature, the benefit of wildlife and the nation; although on some reserves a crop of sheep, venison or trees is a by-product of running the Reserve.

Located in a rural setting 9 miles from Dumfries, Caerlaverock is an example of a site rich in the historical heritage of Scotland set amidst the wild space of the natural world, with both aspects well managed and preserved.
Run by Historic Scotland for Caerlaverock Estate, the success of this attraction can be measured by the 30,000 visitors a year who come through the gates of the castle.
The NNR consists of 8000 hectares of intertidal mud flats and unimproved saltmarsh and is kept wilder with less visitor infrastructure to minimise the risk of disturbance.

There will then be a visit to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's Caerlaverock Wetlands Centre, an internationally-important, 560 ha nature reserve also on the shores of the Firth.
Loch Lomond straddles the boundary of the Scottish highlands with the southern part of the loch being surrounded by lowland farmland and woodland landscapes, whilst the northern part (which will not be visited) surrounded by more mountainous terrain.
The NNR at Endrick Mouth is long established and comprises farmland and a number of wooded islands within the loch.

Introducing the recent review of NNR's in ScotlandScottish Natural Heritage chairman John Markland said: "Over the years NNR's have been declared for various reasons, all very valid at the time.
In future NNR's in Scotland are to be defined as having certain attributes and be fitted for one or more of three purposes.
Among the areas which would qualify as NNR's under the new regime are Glen Affric, The Grey Mare’s Tail and an extension to Loch Leven NNR at Vane Farm.
