Cagayan de Oro is located in a valley tucked between hills that slope toward Macajalar Bay.
Based on 16th century accounts, the name Cagayan was derived from the word "cagaiang," the name given by the Spanish colonizers to the settlement's river because of its close similarity to the Cagayan River in Cagayan Valley in the northern Philippines.
The name Cagayan was subsequently used to also refer to the convent that the Recollect priests built along the banks of the Cagayan River as well as to the natives who converted to Christianity and built their houses around the convent.

Senior Supt. Minoy Darimbang, deputy city director, said they expressed apprehension that the feuds would cause disturbances during the conduct of the elections.
Darimbang said the additional troopers would come from the Regional Mobile Group based in Cagayan de Oro City and would be deployed to six of the city's pre-dominantly Muslim barangays.
