The Cahersiveen Poor Law Union was formed 19th September 1840, and had a population of 26,785.
The Cahersiveen Relief Committee of 1921 no longer saw the need for the workhouse, and so it's doors were closed.
The Daniel O'Connell referred to is "The Liberator"(1775-1847), responsible for achieving civic freedom for Irish Catholics in 1829 in the form of Catholic Emancipation - he was born in Cahersiveen.

John was a keen sportsman and was honourary president of St. Mary’s GAA Club in Cahersiveen and was one of the founding members of the club.
Truly one of the old stock, his passing marks the end of an era in Cahersiveen and many were sad to see him go but were grateful for how he enriched their lives.

Cahersiveen entered the county championship and were declared winners in 1896.
In 1929 Cahersiveen Christian Brothers school were given permission to enter a team in the South Kerry Junior Championship under the name of Saint Mary's.
Cahersiveen had two teams for about four years but due to emigration numbers dwingled and the town was only able to field one team.

Various tourist attractions dotted around the ring and on the peninsular itself draw in busloads of tourists (fortunately all adhering to the recommendation and going in the opposite direction to us).
We had a couple of stops on the way to admire scenery, stroll along the rocky beaches and to explore an old dry-stonewall fort amongst other things.
After a short drive from Waterville to Cahersiveen, we found a nice, out of the way, little campsite and settled in.
