When European castles were opened up and expanded into pleasure dwellings and power houses from the late 15th century, their "castle" designations, relics of the feudal age, often remained attached to the dwelling, resulting in many un-castlelike castles and châteaux.
Castle walls, together with lodgings (keep) suitable for a Baron, as well as lower grade housing within the walls to accommodate some of the key population of the local area, served this purpose.

A number of years ago, a violent storm contributed to the further decay of the castle and a huge section of one corner of the castle that was already weakened by the passage of time collapsed.
Cahir castle was no exception and we enjoyed a very informative video presentation of the various historical attractions in Cahir and the surrounding areas.
Whilst in Cahir, we were thinking of parking in the car castle car park (there were no signs telling us that we couldn’t) but the drive through a small wood to get to the Swiss Cottage revealed a much better spot.

[Thursday - 11/14/02] Cahir Castle is a great 15th-century castle of the Butler family near the town center of Cahir where we stopped for lunch.
Both Cahir Castle and the town lie about 15 km south of Cashel so it made for a great stop while journeying southwest.
Unfortunately, because they are made of similar local stone, we kept blurring the two castles together later in the trip.

Cahir is a lot of fun and we were there for almost 3 hours, plus we walked down to the Swiss Cottage, had lunch in town and poked around an artist's shop in Cahir.
We were in Cahir on 9/11/01 and found the Swiss Castle a wonderful distraction from the horrors.
Carrigeen Castle has had some mixed reviews, Peig Butler runs a tight ship, and if you are traveling with children, she might make your stay a bit less pleasant.
